16255 Emma Belle Eskew, fourth child of Thomas and Mary Eskew, was born in Palmyra, IN on August 26, 1900. Emma Eskew arrived in Baca County with her family in May, 1915.

When Thomas Eskew moved to the Pritchett area to prove his claim of land offered for homesteading, Jacie and Emma filed a claim on an 80 acre plot adjoining the 320 acre farm. This acreage now belongs to Jacie's son, Chester Kreiger.

Emma Eskew and P.C. "Cecil" Stuart were married on March 11, 1921, in Joy Coy, CO. P.C. Stuart was a traveling evangelist for the First Church of God. Emma Eskew Stuart was always willing to accept a challenge; one of the first, accepting the responsibility of helping her new husband raise his five children. The family established a home in Hugoton, KS.

The Rev. P.C. Stuart was always in demand for Revival Meetings and often was away from the family for as much as six months at a time. Thus the responsibility for the five children and the five children that were to be born to P.C. and Emma Stuart, was Emma's. Norma Jeanne was born in January, 1924; Mary Lois in July, 1925; Virginia Lynn in February, 1927; Howard Presley in November, 1929 and Paul Neal in December, 1931.

Although left alone with a growing family, Emma taught her children the true meaning of Christian love. Emma was stricken with Parkinson's Disease in 1926. Even with the prospect of being crippled, she continued working with her husband and family in Christian work and had the reputation of being able to cheer any one who came to visit.

In 1939, Cecil Stuart accepted the call to the Mission Field in Cuba serving six to nine months a year for seventeen years. Emma remained in the States as the younger children finished school.

These years were a test of faith as the salary for missionaries was strictly left up to the Lord. Emma's faith was rewarded as friends and acquaintances helped meet the financial need.

During these years, the Stuart family lived in Lakeland, FL and Darlington, SC. Emma sacrificed visits with family and friends in Baca County, but always longed for the day when she would live closer to her mother, sisters and brothers.

In August, 1946, the Stuart family moved to Nowata, OK; they could again be with the family they had seen very little of for more than ten years. Until ill health forced them to remain at home, Cecil and Emma would try to visit the Springfield and Pritchett areas. Cecil looked forward to helping Bill Eskew harvest Broom Corn.

Cecil and Emma Stuart had dedicated their lives to promoting the work of the Lord. Death came to P.C. Stuart on April 3, 1961, Easter Sunday. Emma Stuart died on December 21, 1964, in Nowata, OK. The Lord chose to call two of His workers home as the world celebrates His Birth and Resurrection.[310662.ftw]

16257 Emma was employed at the Brown Palace Hotel in Denver at the time of her death. Her death certificate indicates she was "caught" in a passenger elevator and sustained injuries that caused her death. The Denver Post lists her brief obituary not mentioning her husband Earl, so possibly he predeceased her. The obit mentions her sister Marie B. Schwarz and that Emma is the sister in law of Frank Schwarz of Detroit Michigan and great aunt of Eleanor (Schwarz) Weigle. The Denver Post article about her death is posted on this Ancestry page also. Bringel, Emma J. (I181696)

As a baby, Mother employed a "nurse-maid" and when we moved to Huntington, I was cared for by a young lady from Warren, IN named Anna Adsit. She was employed to look after me when Mother was working in Ft. Wayne. She also helped my grandmother (Muddie) with the house. Muddie was not very well for years - I remember my Mother saying that she could never remember her mother being well. Muddie was not into kids - she loved to have Uncle Bill, Ada Lee, Dickie Lynn and Nancy come from Indianapolis to visit but was so glad when they left as the children made her very nervous. She was not mean to me but certainly wasn't pleased with much of what I did or said. I don't know if she was resentful because my mother and father had to get married which was a calamity in l924 or whether she just didn't really feel warmth for any children. I dreaded the two or three days a week that Mother traveled to Ft. Wayne for her radio show and left me with Muddie. I would sit beside the radio in the living room just waiting for her program to begin. When it was over, I'd stand by the front window watching for her to walk up Byron St. and home. I remember that we often took the Interurban to Ft. Wayne just to shop. The depot was located on E. Market Street and I believe that the fare each way was 75 cents (25 miles each way). On the way home in the early evening, we could count the houses that had already installed electric lights and those which still had karosene lamps. Little by little, the lamps disappeared as did the out-houses! The main place to shop in Ft. Wayne was the Wolf and Dessauer store. About 5 floors of shopping and on the sixth floor was the Tea Room which was a wonderful place to have lunch. They put on a fashion show at lunchtime. The fashions were presented from the exclusive Crystal Room. In later years, Mother bought many of her clothes from the Crystal Room and was always served by Mrs. Dunkelberg. I remember that after our (Don and Joan's) house burned down on March l8, l947, I was left with only borrowed clothes so on March l9th, Don and I went to Ft. Wayne to buy all new clothes. We had lunch in the Tea Room and one of the models had on a three piece black suit of the finest wool I had ever seen. Don insisted that I get that suit (it was a size l2). When we went down to the Crystal Room to try it on, I nearly fainted when Mrs. Dunkelberg said the price was $l00.00. Don was adament that I get it which I did. The funny thing is that I probably only wore it two or three times as, unbeknown to me, I was pregnant and it just didn't fit very long. Then after Kathy was born, I never really got into it again before I was pregnant again. But it was beautiful to the feel.

16296 F.L. "Tinker" Sulsberger, 87, who was known as the "kid sheriff" when first elected in 1948 and later became the dean of Ohio sheriffs, died Tuesday in the Woodsfield Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
The Monroe County native acquired the nickname of kid sheriff after his election at the age of 27 when he was believed to be the youngest sheriff in the nation.
He retired after approximately 38 years of service and was the dean of Ohio sheriffs at that time. The sheriff who came closest to that record at that time had served for seven terms or 28 years.
Sulsberger's youth when elected and his long tenure aren't the only things notable during his service. He had an enviable record in solving murders and bank robberies.
In addition, he introduced the idea of stickers identifying the vehicle owner's home county in 1980, and it was signed into law by the governor two years later. He favored the stickers as an aid to law enforcement, particularly in rural counties.
Except for portions of two terms, he served as sheriff from his election in the late 1940s until his "second" retirement. He completed terms begun by Homer Antill and Robert Wilson.
Sulsberger retired at the end of 1984 and then came out of retirement in 1987 when Wilson resigned because of other employment.
It isn't unusual for sheriffs to handle life-and-death situations, but one rescue was vitally important to him personally. The incident occurred during his retirement when a two-car accident occurred, and his wife, Rosalie, was pinned in a blazing car.
Sulsberger broke the window on the left side of his wife's car and pulled her from the vehicle. The accident occurred near their home at Tinker's Dam between Malaga and Miltonsburg.
Despite confrontations with murderers and other criminals, he only carried a gun a couple of times while on duty. He once said, "I think at times if I had a gun, I probably would have shot somebody. I can talk my way out of it. You can do it if you make up your mind."
Among his honors was his selection by the Buckeye State Sheriffs' Association as the "Outstanding Sheriff of the Year" in Ohio. That was the year that Sulsberger during a 24-hour period arrested three persons wanted for murder, two for killing the Adams County sheriff and the other for a murder in Monroe County.
In 1989, he and Tim Price, who now is sheriff but was chief deputy at that time, arrested two persons in connection with a marijuana haul considered by state officials to be the largest in Ohio that year.
Sulsberger wasn't the first member of his family to serve as Monroe County sheriff as his grandfather, Louis, a Civil War veteran, served two terms, and an uncle served as sheriff in the 1930s. One of his four children, Margie Ann Hannahs, now is a deputy in the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.
