Hello Rita, My great Grandfather, Henry Nuwer married Elizabeth NICHTER 1843-1923. Elizabeth's parents were Andrew Nichter and Agatha BOHNWITZ, both born in Bavaria, Germany. Elizabeth had a sister, Eva and two brothers, Balthaser (1842-1904)and Francis. Balthaser married Henry Nuwer's sister, Ann Marie. These families were from the Western New York (Buffalo) area. Might this NICHTER family be related to your NICHTER family?

I know a great researcher on this line, but she isn't on the Internet. She's Kathleen Fife Miller. Kathleen's shared with me copies of the baptismal records she found in Doerrenbach, Rheinland-Pfalz, where both of our ancestors were from. Please e-mail me privately and I'll share her mailing address. Here's some of what she's shared with me, but it's been a few years and she was actively searching German records last time we corresponded: Jacob m. Anna Maria Josephine Kunz (b. 1834) on 8 Nov. 1859 in Annweiler, Rheinland-Pfalz. They arrived in the port of New York City on 14 April 1861; no children were listed with them upon arrival. Their children: Mary Nichter, b. 7 APril 1862, in Lafayette, Ind.; (Sr. Athanasia of Franciscan order); d. 27 Oct. 1933; buried St. Boniface Cemetery in Lafayette. Johan Jacob Nichter, b. 26 April 1864; baptized 26 Jun 1864; on 24 Sept. 1890 at St. Boniface m. Catherine Johanna Kessen (b. 1865, d. 18 Dec. 1939 in Bartlesville, Okla.); Johan Jacob d. 1945; bur. St. Peter's Cemetery in Butler, PA Unknown Infant d. 9 Aug. 1865; bur in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Lafayette, Ind. Joannes (John) Nichter, b. 2 Feb. 1867. On 5 Sept. 1893 at St. Boniface (Lafayette) he m. Catherine Reuter (b. 10 March 1866; d. 20 April 1943). John d. 24 Nov. 1943. They are buried at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Delphi, Ind. (The person I told you about descends from this one.) Unknown Infant Nichter d. 4 July 1869; bur St. Joseph's in Lafayette. Matthaes (Matthew) Nichter (aka Neister), b. 21 Sept. 1872; in 1900 census, listed in Tippecanoe Co., Ind., at Matt (in Wea Township, near his birthplace). He was a horse trader living in "a tent." Listed as a boarder in the Enterprise Hotel in 1905-06 according to a listing in the Indiana Room at Tippecanoe. Listed as a "horse dealer (Gypsy)." I believe I found him in the ancestry.com World War I draft listings as living out him the West somewhere. (Sorry--have to run to a meeting and no time to re-find that info.) I have a Web page on Doerrenbach at paintlickreflections.com/doerrenbach.html. Check out the photos! I hope to get more of the other Nichters on the genealogy page ONE of these days. But with three part-time jobs and a family, there has been no time for genealogy lately. Good luck in your search! Let me know if you need Kathleen's address. Rita

MESA, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -
A woman accused of causing a deadly accident on I-17 Tuesday morning has been charged with second degree murder. And court documents show she was driving on a license that was suspended for a 2012 DUI conviction.

[READ MORE: Motorcyclist killed in rear-end collision on I-17; driver arrested]

Tuesday's wreck killed a man heading to work on his motorcycle. Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman Raul Garcia said Dennis Oddo, 57, of Phoenix, was hit by a Dodge Stratus just after midnight.

Garcia said Leith Monroe, 33, was driving the car at a high speed when she clipped the motorcycle, shearing off one of the front wheels of the car. Oddo was thrown from the motorcycle and tumbled along the roadway.

A witness stopped and gave first aid and CPR to Oddo. He was transported to a hospital where he died.

Monroe stopped about a quarter mile from the scene and later was taken into custody by Arizona state troopers. Garcia said she was uncooperative on scene.

A witness reported seeing Monroe get out of the car and "appear to stumble around," according to the court documents

Also according to court documents, DPS troopers "immediately detected a strong odor of alcoholic beverage coming from the subject and located several open and closed containers or alcoholic beverages inside the passenger compartment of the vehicle."

Other drivers had also reportedly called 911 reporting the Stratus tailgating and weaving round the roadway.

According to court documents, as troopers spoke with Monroe, they" immediately detected a strong odor of alcoholic beverage coming from the subject and located several open and closed containers of alcoholic beverage inside the passenger compartment of the vehicle."

Monroe was transported to the Deer Valley DPS office where officials say "she became verbally and physically violent" and reportedly tried to grab the needle as troopers were trying to draw blood. According to court documents, Monroe tried to break from from the detective's grasp, and also "began to use profanity and become irate."

It also turns our Monroe was driving on a suspended license. Authorities say her driver's license had been suspended for a 2012 DUI conviction.

According to court documents, Leith has a record of numerous prior arrests including the DUI, and that her "arrest behavior directly related to current arrest."

She is due back in court Feb. 23.

16191 DULUTH, Minn. -- It was nearing sunset when they appeared. Three vessels. Three frothing wakes. One carrying a body reclaimed from Saturday's plane crash.

That was the sum total of a 12-hour day on Lake Superior, Monday, where 14 rescuers from a host of agencies spent the day first trying to raise the wreckage, then settling for the most precious result.

"Getting the wreckage was secondary to getting the victim," said Capt. Tom Crossmon of the St. Louis County Rescue Squad.

Crossmon led the rescuers through a day he described as Murphy's Law unbound. Little things went wrong all day. What started out as T-shirt weather, turned on a biting wind and suddenly the rescuers couldn't find enough clothing, couldn't keep their tethered boats from slamming and couldn't hold a good anchor.

A gurney bearing the body of the man killed in Saturday's plane crash in Lake Superior is wheeled to a waiting medical examiner's van at McQuade Small Craft Harbor on Monday evening. Divers recovered the body from 137 feet of water earlier in the day. Forum News Service: Steve Kuchera

The net result from two dives totaling roughly an hour at the 137-foot deep wreckage site was accomplishing the primary mission. The wreckage would wait.

"We're trying to get a dignified removal here," said the shore-bound Kolleen Kennedy, supervising investigator for the St. Louis County medical examiner's officer.

The rescuers, six of them volunteers, including Crossmon, who took a day off work, hoisted the bagged body onto the deck then a gurney as pallbearers would -- three to a side. Inside the bag was the body of a man whose single-engine, kit-built Lancair IV vanished from radar late Saturday morning. Crossmon said the identity of the pilot may be revealed as soon as Tuesday.

The pilot was the lone occupant of the aircraft, which arrived Friday from Bend, Ore., and left Duluth International Airport bound for Goose Bay, Labrador, in far eastern Canada. The U.S. Coast Guard said Saturday it received a report from the tower of "a single-engine white and maroon airplane spiraling down with a loss of communications."

Saturday's quick response was critical to Monday's positive result.

"It narrowed down the search area," Crossmon said, despite a small debris path upon which first-responders could smell the fuel. Debris on the lake surface was about 1.2 miles offshore from Duluth's Brighton Beach.

A Federal Aviation Administration official was on shore Monday ready to investigate the wreckage, which Crossmon said will now be raised sometime next week. It's a relatively small wreckage site for an aircraft, he said, visible to rescuers in the boat from remotely operated underwater vehicles. Presently, all the lines and straps are in place to get that wreckage afloat in short order, with Crossmon estimating an hour or two.

The body was pinned in the wreckage, which made it difficult for divers, two of them, to bring up. The retrieving divers were commercial divers from Superior Scuba Center, who worked in concert with a pair of law enforcement divers, who are trained to a strict depth of 130 feet.

The National Transportation Safety Board was not on hand, but is investigating the crash. The NTSB is an independent examiner that will release the ultimate study and findings of the crash.

Monday's rescue featured Superior/Douglas County Dive, the St. Louis County sheriff and more. Crossmon praised the effort and compared it favorably to others among the myriad with which he's been involved.

"It was really a very, very capable team," he said.

DULUTH, Minn. (AP) — Authorities in northeastern Minnesota say the pilot who died when his plane crashed into Lake Superior last weekend was from Germany.

The St. Louis County sheriff’s office identifies the man as 47-year-old Alexander Georg Obersteg of Steinfeld, Germany.

While an official identification has not been made, items found during the investigation lead officials to believe Obersteg was the sole victim and owner of the single-engine airplane.

Authorities believe Obersteg was leaving the Duluth International Airport on Saturday en route to Goose Bay, Labrador, with an ultimate destination of Steinfeld.

An autopsy ruled out the possibility of a medical emergency contributing to the crash. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Divers recovered Obersteg’s body on Monday. Plans are being made to recover the rest of the plane wreckage.
