Hello Ursula,

I hope this finds you in good health.

The Johnson family reunion is finally over and so I am ATTEMPTING to
learn how to attach photos to an email.        IF this is successful, you
will have the tombstone photos from Anna Marie Kuprion Almond, her husband
and her son; all are buried in Calvary Cemetery, Louisville, KY.
Here are notes from Ronald J. Kuprion - he was shot and killed in an

died early yesterday at General Hospital of a gunshot wound he received in
a shooting incident Wednesday night on Pope, just south of Frankfort.
(Avenue) Ronald J. Almond of 1637 Lucia, died at 2:37 a.m. of a gunshot
wound in the back, according to Detuty coroner Lloyd Roemele. Two other
men were injuried in the incident. Thomas V. Smith Jr., 23, of 817
Mulberry, is in critical condition at General with a gunshot wound in the
right side, and Donald Griffin, 33, of 1414 Rufer, is in satisfactory
condition at Methodist Hospital with facial cuts. Police were told that an
argument ensued after a man and woman approached the victims' parked car.
The man fired seven shots as the victims attempted to run away, witnesses
said. Griffin said the man chased and caught him, then beat him with the
pistol. Police charged Larry T. James, 19, of the 1800 block of Melwood,
with murder and malicious shooting and wounding and malicious striking and
wounding. Mrs. Mary Jean Almond, 22, Almond's estranged wife, of the 1100
block of Payne, was charged with murder and being an accessory to the
shooting and wounding charges. James and Mrs. Almond were arraigned in
Police Court yesterday. Their cases were continued to Saturday. They are
being held without bond. Almond was a carpenter's helper for Kentucky
Manufacturing Co. Besides his widow, he is survived by a son, Ronald J.
Almond Jr., and his mother, Mrs. Anna Marie Kuprion Almond. The funeral
will be at 10 a.m. tomorrow at St. Brigid Catholic Church, 1520 Hepburn,

Almond. Funeral Mass Sat., Nov., 8, 1o a.m. at St. Brigid Church.
Interment in Calvary Cemetery. Visitors received at Barrett Funeral Home,
1230 Bardstown Rd., Fri., from noon till 9 p.m.        I have not yet
looked up his father's obituary and I never did find his mother's obituary
at all.  I have only looked in the Courier Journal, and not the Catholic
newspapers yet.        On 4 Aug, just days ago, Louisville received a
cloudburst of rain - 4 and 1/2" to 6" of rain in only 75 minutes, so we
had flash flooding from inadequate drainage - and one of the places
heavily damaged was the main library, where I go to look up obits.
It was a tremendous storm, very sudden, and while we expected rain - not
quite so much rain.  The storm settled over Louisville and just kept on
raining!        Please let me know IF these photos come through and I will
begin to send MORE!        Anna Marie is one of the 5 children of Albert

1571 BIOGRAPHY:
Henry was a "great" father. His devotion to his children was more evident than his devotion to his wife. He owned and ran a store next to his home in Stafford, Ohio. Upstairs (over the store room) he ran a pool hall. He had a team of horses (Jack and Bob) who were part of the family. They were great work horses, except for one thing..... It seems that Bob refused to pull the wagon when Henry cleaned out the "privy". I Don't know.... I think that's pretty understandable and funny ! Around 1918, Henry took his family to Oklahoma for awhile. Working in the oil fields there. After returning to Ohio, Henry worked in the oil fields in Ohio. It was his job to drive around and turn the pumps on and off, in Ohio various oil leases. He often talked bout the "balls of fire" that would glide along the ground, crossing the road in front of his car and vanish into the fields. He never could figure out what those lights were. Henry was missing his right thumb. One time while working on an oil rig.... alone in the "boonies".... he got his thumb stuck in the machinery. The pounding of the pump was pulverizing his hand and there was no one around to help him turn off the pump. He finally got his pin knife out and managed to cut his own thumb off. This courageous act probably saved his life. After retirement, Henry used to walk about three miles to town and back everyday. He would hang out at his favorite barber shop and shoot the breeze with old friends. When Henry broke his hip, he slowed down, however managed to stay pretty active until he died at age ninety-two. died at age ninety-two. Rhonda Gryspos

History of San Joaquin County, California, with biographical sketches... by George H. Tinkham, Historic Record Comnpany, Los Angeles, 1923.

Pages 1521-1522

JOHN A. BENDER -- Since 1903 John A. Bender has been residing in the Lodi section of San Joaquin County and is the owner of a forty-acre vineyard five miles south of Lodi. He was born in Menno, S. D., August 11, 1885, a son of John K. and Christina (Bender) Bender. John K. Bender was a farmer in his native land of Russia, having been born near the city of Odessa. In 1903 the family came to California and located in the vicinity of Lodi where the father purchased a twenty-acre vineyard on Cherokee Lane; later he sold this ranch and removed to Lodi, where he passed away in 1916, and the mother passed away in 1906. They were the parents of four children: Charles C.; John A., our subject; Margaret, Mrs. Henry Bender; and Bertha, Mrs. Rudolph Rode, both living in the Henderson district.

John A. Bender received a grammar school education in Menno, S. D., and assisted his father with the ranch work until he was twenty-one years old, when he bought 160 acres on the Elliott road north of Lockeford, where he engaged in farming for six or seven years; on this quarter section of land he set out a vineyard of twenty-five acres; later he sold his ranch and bought the place where he now resides, which is situated about four miles south of Lodi; this ranch contains forty acres, one half of which is in alfalfa and the remaining half is set to vineyard; there are two irrigating plants on his ranch, one with a five-inch pump with a twelve-horsepower motor and the other with a six-inch pump with a fifteen-horsepower motor; Mr. Bender has also remodeled the house into a comfortable and modern residence.

On October 28, 1906, in Lodi, occurred the marriage of Mr. Bender, which united him with Miss Pauline Schenkenberger, a native of South Dakota, born near Scotland, a daughter of John and Louise (Barrett) Schenkenberger. Mrs. Bender received her education in her native state and accompanied her parents to California about twenty-five years ago and here her father engaged in farming in the vicinity of Lodi. Mr. and Mrs. Bender are the parents of nine children: Herbert, Thelma, John, Jr., Roberta, Roy, Robert, Alfred, Raymond and Willard. Mr. Bender is a Republican in politics and the family are identified with the German Reformed Church.

Tom, Maybe this is of no interest but perhaps it is. Earlier you mentioned that Josephine Judd was not a Swiss name and you were correct. Looking through old papers, I discovered Josephine's name was actually spelled JUD. This is what I discovered about Jud: JUD 1. Swiss German and Slovenian: ethnic nickname meaning "Jew" 2. English: variant spelling of Judd. This makes a lot more sense. I hope this is helpful. Ellen

Death record states that he was born in 1857, tombstone indicates that he was born in 1852. Census records show him as the third child of George and Pheobe Hoff, approximately 3 years old in the 1860 census. Edward Hoff's birthdate being given as Sept. 29, 1856 on tombstone and death certificate, it is impossible that William would be born on the 31st of March the following year. It is possible that Edward was born in 1855. BURIAL:

Issue of the Central Missouri Republican
For William P. Back
Submitted by Bill Scroggin
Death has again invaded our community and this time chose for his mark a young man, who but a week or so before was the picture of health. William P. Back died at his home about seven miles from Boonville on Thursday, January 20, 1898, after a short illness of pneumonia. His condition was not thought to be serious until the day before he died and his sudden taking away was a great shock to his many friends. He was born in Boonville July 4, 1863, and was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Gottfried Back. January 10, 1892, he was married to Miss Emma Garthoffer, who, with three little children, survives him. The funeral services were held in Boonville at the Evangelical church at 1 o'clock Saturday afternoon, the pastor, Rev. Kamphausen, officiating. Notwithstanding the inclement weather the church was crowded with relatives and friends of the deceased, many of whom followed the remains to Walnut Grove cemetery. The services were under the auspices of the Boonville lodge of the Woodmen of the World of which the deceased was a member. He also belonged to Boonville lodge No. 23, Royal Tribe of Joseph, the members of which attended the funeral in a body. In both of these orders he carried insurance to the amount of $3,500. Mr. Back was universally esteemed as a good citizen and, in his death, the community has suffered a severe loss. To the bereaved widow, parents and children, we extend our heartfelt sympathy.
Back, William Paul (I8505)

DANIEL METTLER

The biography of Daniel Mettler varies very little from that of many other
early pioneers who settled in the Eureka territory. His ancestry is traced back
to Frederick Mettler, a great-grandfather, who emigrated from Wurtenburg,
Germany, to the colony of Kassel, in South Russia, to escape military service
in his native country. At that time the Czarina of Russia had made the promise
that immigrants who helped to build up the country would be exempt from all
military service. His grandfather, Henry Jacob Mettler, followed in the
footsteps of his father, who died when young Henry was but seven years of age,
in tilling the soil of his native Kassel. His father, Andrew Mettler, emigrated
to America when young Daniel was only 16 years of age. Accompanying Andrew
Mettler to America was his wife and family consisting of 10 children, four
girls and six boys, one of whom was young Daniel. The cause of their migration
to America was the same as prompted their forefathers to leave Germany almost a
century before, namely, to escape compulsory military service, and to take up
free land.

The Mettler family arrived in Yankton, South Dakota, on the 31st of May, 1874,
and soon afterwards filed on three claims of land in Hutchinson County,
approximately 33 miles north of Yankton. A sod house and farm buildings were
soon constructed, and with the aid of a yoke of oxen, the land was soon made
tillable.

Young Daniel worked with his parents until he was 22 years of age, when he
married Margaret Huether. The Reverend Orth of Yankton, officiated at the
wedding. The newlyweds immediately filed on a homestead on 160 acres, and also
on a 120-acre preemption claim. However, on the 2nd of April, 1889, a prairie
fire ravaged large tracts of land in Hutchinson County, and completely destroyed
the Daniel Mettler farm home, all buildings, 55 hogs, all his machinery, and
about 1,000 bushels of grain, none of which was covered by insurance.

Sad and disappointed, Daniel Mettler decided to look elsewhere for a home.
Consequently, with the balance of his money, young Daniel purchased 18 head of
oxen and started out for northern South Dakota. Upon his arrival in Eureka, he
sold the oxen for $130.00 per pair, only a part of which was paid in cash. The
balance is still owing to him. He then purchased some lumber and hired some
carpenters and built a house on the corner where Market Street intersects the
present State Highway No. 10. Title to this property is still in the name of
the Mettler family. On July 4, 1889, the family arrived in Eureka and took
possession of the new home.

Mr. Mettler's first years in Eureka were spent as a stock buyer. For a time he
also bought grain in a flat house. In 1894, he purchased a one-third interest
in a general merchandise store, operated by Andrew Brandt. Mr. Mettler was
never active in conducting this business. Soon afterwards the business failed
and Mr. Mettler not only lost his interest in the business, but was also forced
to pay $1,100.00 toward debts owing to wholesale houses. However, he was not
discouraged but continued in his own business of buying grain for many years
afterwards. In 1893, he purchased a half section of land. Later he purchased
another 480 acres of land about three miles southwest of Eureka. Mr. Mettler
still has title to all this land except 320 acres, which he sold. At various
times he owned lots and houses in Eureka, and even caused a certain portion of
his lands be platted and added to the city under the name of Mettler's
Addition. He at one time owned the present Oster and Weixel elevators, as well
as owning an elevator in Hillsview. In conjunction with all these businesses,
he also bought live stock and wool, and sold farm implements.

In 1897, his wife died, leaving seven children. For a year he attempted to
carry on, but realizing his helplessness, he re-married. His second wife was a
widow, Mrs. Caroline Sinkbeil of Parkston, South Dakota, who at the time of her
marriage to Daniel was the mother of three children. To this second union was
born one daughter, Frieda Koelle, who is living in Eureka today.

The names of the children resulting from his previous marriage are: Margaret
Klein, Eureka, died in 1906; Emelia Heer, Denhoff, N. Dak.; Carolina Kafer
Schiermeister, Hazelton, N. Dak.; Christine Klifel, Lodi, California; Eva
Klifel, Modesto, California; Lena Bartel, Lodi, California; Reinhold Mettler,
Eureka, S. Dak.

The names of the step-children are: Adolph Sinkbeil of Zeeland, N. Dak., and
Mrs. H. D. Opp of Eureka, S. Dak.

Mr. Mettler retired from active business in 1920, after a long and successful
business career. He is in good health at the present time, except for
occasional sieges of eczema, and is living with his youngest daughter, Mrs. J.
G. (Frieda) Koelle. His wife died in 1936. He is 78 years old at this time.

The present economic depression and bank failures, as a result of which he lost
approximately $18,000.00, deprived him of many comforts in his declining years.
However, he is still happy and contented.
