    BIOGRAPHY: Francis Maurer/Maria Beck - Alsace-Lorrn

I am searching for the parents, siblings, and/or children of Francois (also seen as Francis) Maurer and Maria Beck of Metz, Alsace-Lorraine, France. They are the parents of my 3rd great-grandfather, Sebastian Maurer, Sr. It is my understanding, incidentally, that the name at one time was reputedly "du Maurier." Sebastian came to the U.S., marrying Catherine Phillip in St. Clair Co., IL on 31 January 1853. Their children include: CATHERINE (KATE) MAURER, b. Abt. 1853; m. ANDREAS MELLEIN, 13 January 1874, St. Clair Co., IL. APOLLONIA MAURER, b. Abt. 1854; m. VICTOR TRAXLER, 09 November 1875, Monroe Co., IL. SEBASTIAN MAURER, JR., b. 1856, prob. IL; d. 19 March 1861, IL (burial in Immaculate Conception Church Cemetery, Columbia, Monroe Co., IL). MARY MAURER, b. 19 October 1858 in IL, and died 13 October 1937 in MO (St. Matthew Cemetery, St. Louis, MO). She married WILLIAM VON DER AHE on 24 January 1880 in St. Clair Co., IL. The last name is also seen as Fonderoy and Vonderae, among other spellings. LUISA MAURER, b. Abt. 1863; m. UNKNOWN BENNETT. FRANK MAURER, b. 11 July 1864, Columbia, Monroe Co., IL; d. 12 September 1929, St. Louis, St. Louis Co., MO (Cahokia Cemetery). Frank, my great-great-grandfather, married Catherine "Katie" Kirchoff (spellings vary) on 12 October 1886 in Cahokia, St. Clair Co., IL. JOHN S. MAURER, b. Abt. 1866; d. Abt. 1954; m. HENRITTE (Henrietta?) HOELLE. Information in the burial records for Sebastian indicates he was born on 15 February 1826 in Monteperone, in the Alsace-Lorraine region (listed as ?Lotharingia? in the funeral records) of France. Census records list his place of birth as Metz. The following is provided just as a point of reference. Per The Columbia Encyclopedia (Sixth Edition, 2000), Lotharingia ?comprised, roughly, the present Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Lorraine, Alsace, and NW Germany, including Aachen and Cologne?? and added, ?[Saint] Bruno?s difficulties with the Lotharingian nobles caused him to divide (959) the country into the duchies of Lower Lorraine, in the north, and Upper Lorraine, in the south (the name Lorraine being the modern form of Lotharingia)? and, further, ?From the Treaty of Verdun until the present time the territories comprised in Lotharingia, particularly Upper Lorraine, have been contested between Germany and France.? Sebastian?s burial record has led us to the aforementioned parents; here is the entry from the Catholic Church?s records for the Immaculate Conception Church Cemetery, Columbia, Monroe Co., IL, roughly translated from the Latin entry: ?On 10 March 1889 was buried Sebastian, son of Francis Maurer and [his] wife Maria Beck, born on 15 February 1826, Montperone in Lotharingia, died on 7 March 1889.? I am hoping to connect with other relatives. Drop me a line! jEz
