    BIOGRAPHY:
Vitus and Rosalia arrived here through the Port of Orleans around the 1870's. I suspect they originally arrived via New York, settled in German Flatts, Herkimer, New York. There was also a mention in the family record my dad has that Vitus may of had a father named George(I'm hopeing to find some immigration records to verify that)Vitus later came to this area after the civil war during the reconstruction period. It is said that the local farm families were hard pressed for farm hands and distributed fliers looking for workers and that was the reason for their migration to this area. It is also said that it didn't take long for the family here to homestead their own land instead of laboring for others. I would also guess that they originally worked for Peter Klien. There are 3 original land patents on the BOLM website from which you can make copies of these patents. They are all signed by the president in office at the time of issue and also gives property descriptions. By the 1930's/40's John Wilfert had amassed thousands of acres of land. It is said that much of the land was acquired during the great depression when many people here were hurting for money, and also by those who had incurred debts at the Wilfert Store on 2nd Street. It is my belief that the Wilferts survived the depression by working at Remington Arms, and later also haveing worked at the armory in Independence Missouri. I found somewhere the other day that the president asked remington to build 4or5 armories through-out the U.S. right before WWII. The Independance armory being one of them. Earlier in my research I found an obituary from a Missouri (Springfield) newspaper that had an obit for a Wilfert child. Then after learning of the armory there, put the two together.
