    BIOGRAPHY: Notes for JOSEPH WEIS:
    Karen Weis Kershenstein
Joseph Weis came to America in 1854 with his mother and three brothers, Lorenz, Frank, and Andrew. He was naturalized on February 22, 1860. His mother died on January 6, 1882 at the age of 72. His brother Andrew lost his life in the Civil War. [Source: Notebook compiled by Lorenz G. Weis November 1960]
Joseph was of slight build and worked too hard, according to his older brother Lorenz, a huge man who wished that his kid brother had taken life a little easier and had lived longer to enjoy it. [Source: Weis family history compiled by Lawrence P. Weis (Lawry) between 1978 and 1993 and entitled "Early 20th Century - How It Looked to Me"]
When he first came to the U.S., Joseph worked as a hired hand on a farm in Brighton and also was a workman at Crossman Seed Company. Later, while still working on the farm and at the seed company, he took on a third job, that of working another farm "on shares." It was this farm to which he brought his bride, Barbara. Soon afterwards, he bought the farm, and they lived in the old house on the farm for several years before they saved enough money to build a new house. Two cousins who lived in Lockport were engaged to build the new house, which was located on what is now Edgewood Avenue. [Source: Weis family history compiled by Lawrence P. Weis (Lawry) between 1978 and 1993 and entitled "Early 20th Century - How It Looked to Me"]

    Notes for BARBARA BOOS:
After Joseph Weis had been in the U.S. for a few years, he sent money back to Germany for his girlfriend Barbara's passage to the U.S. Unfortunately, her trip took three months because the ship was blown off course and ended up in the southern Atlantic near South America. Because of this, all the passengers were put on reduced rations of water and food as the ship worked its way up the Atlantic coast to New York city.
