Anthony Ehrstein. about 50 years of age, was arrested yesterday for assaulting
his wife, Katherine, at their home, No. 9 Rugraf place, a little street running from
No. 406 Jay street. The family consists, beside* the husband and wife, of seven
children, five girls and two boys. Mrs. Ehrstein has worked hard to maintain the
family when her hnsband could not or would not support them.
Ehrstein has been employed by the contractor on the Front street pavement. He
went on strike with other laborers and while the men have been out he has spent
hiost of his time in consuming bad whisky.
Yesterday morning he arose at 5 o'clock and left the house, returning at 5:30 in the morning in
an ugly mood with a strong smell of liquor on his breath. He started to annoy
his wife and becoming angered beyond control, seized her by the throat and was
choking her when their 11-yoar-old son Interfered to save his mother and struck
the infuriated man on his head with a shoe. The blow mude a slight scalp wound,
but made Ehrstein release his grip on his wife's throat. He threatened to kill her
before the day was over and behaved in such a terrifying manner that his eldest
son, a young man about 25 years old, was obliged to interfere to prevent serious
trouble.
Finally Mrs. Eliwtein procured a warrant for her husband's arrest and he was placed
where he could not harm his wife or children. He was charged with assault in the third degree
and his case will come up before Judge Ernst to-morrow morning.
Officer Scholl made the arrest yesterday nfternoon. It was thought at the police
station from the man's manner that he was insane. He has been arrested before
for cruelty to his family.

EHRSTEIN SENT UP
He of High Fence Fame and Poetic Inclinations goes to Jail to Sober Up.
Anthony EHRSTEIN of 9 Rugraff street, he of high line fence notoriety, who is a laborer by occupation, but spends much time writing poetry about his neighbors and then tickling himself in the ribs to make himself laugh over it, is in trouble.
EHRSTEIN, who when sober does not appear to be overburdened with sense, is very queer and does some strange things when intoxicated. His principal delight when under the influence of liquor is in exercising his vocal organs, and there is a saying in the neighborhood that EHRSTEIN's yells are so well known by people there that when children awake in the night and ask what strange sound they heard, the mothers invariably say, "Never mind, don't be alarmed; EHRSTEIN's drunk again, that's all."
EHRSTEIN has been drinking for several days past, and is said to have written more poetry than usual, and to have sung his favorite songs and yelled his favorite yells till he has driven his wife and neighbors almost to despair, Mrs. EHRSTEIN, who takes very little stock in her husband's ability as a writer of poems, applied yesterday for a warrant for his arrest on a charge of drunkenness and making a nuisance of himself. He was sent to jail this morning and will remain there till he becomes sober and the smile which always, drunk or sober, wreathes his smoothshaven face, reaches its normal state, when but one lone tooth is visible and there is a twinkle in Anthony's eye which seems to say: "I get even mit him yet; is it is."

Anthony Ehrstein, who was arrested some time ago on the charge of threatening
to commit aesault upon Frank Schoen, was brought into the presence of the police
magistrate yesterday morning. From the point of view of the complainant, the visit
was entirely satisfactory, Ehratein being sentenced to pay a fine of $25 or serve
twenty-five days in the penitentiary.Ehrstein's home ia on Rugraff place, and
Schoen lives in the vicinity.' The complainant wanted redress for certain alleged
wrongs that he had suffered at the hands of Ehrstein. Schoen is a milk peddler.
He has a milk route and also has the use of a barn, owned by Mrs. Alice Quinn,
that is in the rear of Ehrstein's place, Schoen's complaint is that one night
when he was comfortably seated upon the milking stool in the barn, and was engaged
in milking one of the cows that comprise his good-sized herd, a big stone whizzed
past his ear. He was certain that it was hurled by Ehratein, and a loud shout at
the same momenf confirmed' this impression. He also says that Ehrstein lately
threatened to brain him with an axe, and that he was afraid that he would carry out
the threat. For this reason he had the man placed under arrest. Ehrstein does
not like to have the barn there. He said that he did not threaten to kill Schoen and
had no such intention.Anton married Catherine Roth on 3 Aug 1873 in Rochester, Monroe County, New York, USA.
