CARL ACKERMAN. JR.

Carl and Ada Ackerman, Jr. with children, Curtis, Carla and Larry.

Carl Ackerman, Jr., son of Carl, Sr. and Matilda, lived his boyhood years on
his parents' farm near Greenway, South Dakota. On March 8, 1934, Carl, Jr.
married Ada Bender, daughter of Martina and Fredrika (Schnabel) Bender of rural
Zeeland. Ada was born June 24, 1914.

Carl and Ada farmed with his parents for two years and then moved to Greenway
where they continued to farm from town. In 1938, the couple moved to a farm
three miles southwest of Greenway. The couple had three children, Larry, born
September 28, 1944; Curtis, born May 6, 1950; and Carla, born August 11, 1957.

During their years on the farm, Carl served on the A.S.C.S. committee in
Campbell County, 24 years of service were with the community committee and six
years were with the county committee. He served a total of thirty years, for
which he was honored upon retirement. Ada was busy raising the children and
helping with the farm. In September, 1975, the couple retired and moved to
Eureka.

On January 31, 1964, Larry Ackerman married Carol Schlittenhart, daughter of
Christ and Lydia (Schell) Schlittenhart. Carol was born September 5, 1947.
Their daughter, Cheryl, was born August 15, 1965. On May 23, 1967, an infant
son, Stacy, was born and died. A son, Jody, was born February 4, 1969, and a
daughter, Traci, was born April 22, 1976.

Larry and Carol presently reside in Aberdeen where Carol works at St. Luke's
Hospital and Larry is employed by H. H. Hoffman on a ranch near Mina. Their
daughter, Cheryl, married Eric Hanson on November 17, 1985 and currently lives
in Spearfish, South Dakota.

Curtis, youngest son of Carl and Ada Ackerman, married Jeanie Quenzer, daughter
of Albert and Alvina (Walther) Quenzer, on June 21, 1975. Jeanie was born
August 4, 1957. They have two sons, Toby, born May 15, 1976, and Ryan, born
October 27, 1979. Curtis and Jeanie took over his parents' farming operation in
1975 when Carl and Ada retired. Jeanie works part-time at the Lutheran Home in
Eureka, and Curtis, following in his father's footsteps, has served on the
A.S.C.S. Campbell County committee for the past eleven years.

Carla, daughter of Carl and Ada, married Earl Rohrbach, son of Albert and Ester
(Beck) Rohrbach on October 20, 1973. Earl was born July 23, 1952. They have two
sons, Kim, born February 21, 1974, and Jason, born July 5, 1975. Carla is a
kidney dialysis assistant and works part-time at the Lutheran Home in Eureka.
She also helps her husband, Earl, who has taken over his parents farm and is
running the operation.

Carl married Ada Bender on 8 Mar 1934 in South Dakota, USA. Ada (daughter of Martin W. Bender and Fredericka Schnabel) was born on 24 Jun 1914 in Zeeland, McIntosh County, North Dakota, USA; died on 29 Jun 1994 in Bismarck, Burleigh County, North Dakota, USA; was buried in Eureka Cemetery, McPherson County, South Dakota, USA. Karl married Matilda Ottmar on 12 Jan 1909. Matilda (daughter of Johannes Ottmar and Elisabetha Götz) was born on 8 Dec 1888 in Odessa, Ukrayina; died on 28 Sep 1977 in South Dakota, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Martin married Fredericka Schnabel on 3 Dec 1907 in North Dakota, USA. Fredericka (daughter of Peter Schnabel and Elisabetha Hausauer) was born on 21 Dec 1888 in Odessa, Ukrayina; died on 27 Nov 1962 in Aberdeen, Brown County, South Dakota, USA; was buried in Riverside Memorial Park, Aberdeen, Brown County, South Dakota, USA. Martin Bender was born in Kassel, South Russia, in the year 1860, the son of John Bender, and while a native of Russia married Christina Knoll in 1883.

A desire to see America and make a new home started their emigration to the United States and in 1885 they left Russia and traveling by rail and water to the United States made their first stop at Tyndal, S. D. The next spring saw them on their way by ox team to McIntosh County, where about six miles West and two miles North of the present site of Venturia, N. D., Mr. Bender filed on three quarters of land.

In 1917, Mr. Bender had the misfortune to lose all his cattle and horses in a fire that also destroyed his fine barn. Mr. and Mrs. Bender continued their farming operations until the spring of 1928 when they left the farm and moved to Venturia, N. D. Idleness, however, was not in Mr. Bender?s make-up, so the next year he, together with his youngest son, engaged in operating a filling station in Venturia and continued that business until the spring of 1931 when he sold his interest in the business.

On July 3, 1931, Mr. Bender was called to the Great Beyond by his Maker. Internment was made in the Venturia cemetery. Mrs. Bender still makes her home in Venturia.

Mr. Bender was less fortunate than various other early pioneers, in that he not only had no property to speak of, when he arrived here, and what little he did have he had borrowed the money to buy.

The early hardships of the Bender family were many. The nearest trading point at that time being Ellendale, N. D., and many were the times he went there for flour, salt and other necessary provisions, making the 100 mile trip both ways on foot. Many times he was compelled to go a hundred miles from home in order to find work so as to support his family. In order to take his family to church he would hitch one ox and one horse to the hay rake and in that way was able to attend church services. Like many other earlier settlers Mr. Bender and family sought safety in Eureka, S. D., when it was reported that the Indians were on the war path.

Mr. Bender at one time sold one of his fine quarter sections of land for the "magnificent" sum of $100.00 in order to pay pressinq debts.

Mr. and Mrs. Bender were of Baptist faith and were blessed with eleven children all of whom are living, namely: Katherine Schnabel; Philpina Dockter; Christina Schrenk, wife of County Commissioner J. P. Schrenk; Bertha Krause; Samuel Bender, farmer; Genthon Bender, operator of a filling station and all living in or near Venturia, N. D.; Martin W. Bender, farmer of Zeeland, N. D.; August M. Bender, a carpenter of Victor, California; Lydia Woehl, of Wishek, N. D.; Albina Feioch, of Aberdeen, S. D.; and Frieda Krause, of Lehr, N. D.

Martin married Christina Knoll on 18 Jan 1883 in Kassel, Odessa, Ukrayina. Christina (daughter of Georg Peter Knoll and Katharina Sattler) was born on 15 Apr 1861 in Kassel, Odessa, Ukrayina; died on 13 Oct 1953 in North Dakota, USA; was buried in Baptist Cemetery, Venturia, McIntosh County, North Dakota, USA.
