    OBITUARY: Daily Tribune, Johnstown, Pa, October 1, 1917: Paul Kuhns Dead At Home In Moxham; Veteran of Civil War Expired This Morning of a Complication of Diseases: Paul Kuhns, a veteran of the Civil War, died at 7:45 o'clock last evening at the Kuhns residence, 635 Coleman Avenue, Seventeenth Ward, after an illness lasting about a fortnight, in his 84th year. Mr. Kuhns' health had been impaired for about three years, but was able to be about until September 16, when he took his bed. His death was due to a complication of diseases. The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon from the Village Street United Evangelical Church of which the deceased was a communicant. The services will be conducted at 2 o'clock by the pastor, the Rev. C.D. Slagle. Six of the grandsons of the deceased, Messrs. Emanuel Seese, of Ogletown; Alonzo Shaffer, of Rummel; Curtis Kuhns, of Trauger; Walter Kuhns, of Greensburg; and John McDonald and Curtis Shaffer, of this city, will act as pallbearers. The services will be in charge of the officers of Emory Fisher Post, No. 30, Grand Army of the Republic. The deceased was a son of George and Elizabeth (Berkey) Kuhns and was born at Dibertsville, Somerset County, in the fall of 1833. Paul Kuhns was a brother of Daniel Kuhns, of Uniontown, a veteran of the Civil War, and Peter Kuhns, of Luxor, Westmoreland County; George Kuhns, another brother of the deceased, served in one of the companies that went out from Ligonier in 1862. He was wounded during an engagement in the South and a few weeks later died at his home in Ligonier. Mrs. Rebecca Livingston, of Uniontown; and Mrs. Tillie Sible, of Greensburg, are sisters of Paul Kuhns. Paul Kuhns was married twice the first time at Scalp Level to Hannah Custer. She died near Dixonville, Indiana County, in the fall of 1878. His second wife was Mrs. Elizabeth Barnhart, of Somerset County. She survives him, together with these children: Elizabeth, wife of Melker Shaffer, of Rummel; Mary A., wife of Joseph Seese, of Ogletown; George Kuhns, of Trauger; William S. Kuhns, of Greensburg; Annie, wife of Russell Shaffer, of Johnstown; Amanda, wife of John Ott, of 635 Coleman Avenue. Besides these, he is survived by 40 grandchildren and 67 great grand children. The deceased was a farmer for many years. He was working for Jonas Weaver near Scalp Level when he enlisted in Company G, 46th Regiment P.V.I. In 1871 he moved to Indiana County where he remained until 1889, at which time he came to Johnstown to work for the Lorain Steel Company. After severing his connection with the Moxham concern he worked for a number of years in the city's street department. Mr. Kuhns was one of the charter members of the Village Street UE Church, was identified with the men's Bible Class in the Sunday school, and was a member of Emory Fisher Post, No. 30, G.A.R.

    OBITUARY: Tribune-Democrat, Johnstown, Cambria Co., Pa; September 12, 1931: Melchoir Shaffer Dies At Windber: Aged Resident Succumbs After Month's Illness; Funeral on Monday: Windber, Sept. 12; Melchoir Shaffer, aged 82, retired, one of the best known residents of Windber, died this morning at his home at 3006 Graham Avenue following a month's illness of diseases incident to age. He was a son of Andrew and Sarah Shaffer, both deceased, and had been a resident of Windber for many years. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Elizabeth Shaffer and these children: Sankey Shaffer, of Windber; Mrs. Sankey Hart, of Seanor; Mrs. Joseph Mitchell, of Scalp Level; Alonza Shaffer, Mrs. Ethel Grush, and Calvin Shaffer, all of Windber. He also leaves a brother Joseph Shaffer, of Kansas; a sister, Mrs. Jessie Foust, of Geistown, and 12 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Funeral services will be conducted Monday afternoon, leaving the home at 1:30 o'clock for the Rummel Lutheran Church. The Rev. John A. Richter will officiate. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The body was prepared for burial by Undertaker G. C. Meek.
