Eva Elizabeth; the eldest daughter of the Bintzes, was called ?Avlis? by her family. It should like a contraction of Eva & Eliz. Avlis married Philipp Kuntz in Germany. Likely in Nothweiler, since that was where her parents lived. Philipp was a small man, about 5?4?? tall. In contrast Avlis was quite tall, & in later years quite heavy. Philipp worked as a forester for the German government, marking trees to be cut. They lived in the village of Nothweiler where their 6 oldest children were born: Henry, Alice, Carolina, Philipp, Fred & Louis. The younger Philipp, who is now living in Woodland, CA, can recall many things about their home in Germany, & many things that happened there. He recalled vividly the little gnarled fellow that used to play his accordion on the streets. As an added attraction for tourists he would go up on a high pinnacle on a nearby mountain near a castle & stand on his head on a projecting ledge. I?m sure this brought him a few extra coins. The townspeople called him the ?Oma Yokel?.

In 1892 the Kuntz family immigrated to the United States. All of Avlis?s brothers, sisters & her parents had left Germany between 1880 & 1886, & by this time were all living in Minnesota with the exception of Louise & her husband, John Jordy, who had not yet moved from Chinoa. Philipp worked in a lumberyard at Clara City for awhile, but eventually they settled on a farm 12 miles north of that village. Their 2 youngest children, Charley & Louise were born in Minnesota.

On September 6, 1901 (the day President McKinley was shot) Alice & Henry left for Donnybrook to file on homesteads; they were the first of their family to make the move to North Dakota. The others likely came shortly afterward. Philipp Kuntz Sr. filed on a quarter section of land, as did Carolina who was 19 years old at that time. It was required that homesteaders live on the land at least 6 months out of the year & at the end of 5 years they could prove up & get title to the land. It would seem that these young girls must have been made of pretty sturdy stuff to live alone in their homestead shacks. Homesteaders usually tried to build their houses as close as they could to one another, often just across the road or quarter line. I have tried to locate these homestead houses in the approximately the right places on my map.

The older children in the family were married during the period that the Kuntzes lived near Donnybrook. Philipp Jr. married Annie Lubitz from Balfour, ND & Henry also married a Balfour girl, Bertha Bethke. Carolina married Frank Horman who farmed near Balfour. Probably they got acquainted through church activities because at that time the span of acquaintances was a radius of about 5 miles. Horses & buggies were not
Conducive to long-distance traveling. (Balfour is about 85 miles from Donnybrook.) Alice married Henry Franke, a carpenter. Fred & Louis, who homesteaded at Shaeffer, ND, married girls from that area.

A very bad tragedy occurred in the Kuntz family in 1915 with the death of Henry Kuntz who died suddenly of a brain hemorrhage. This left his wife with 3 small children to raise. She went back to Balfour to live near her own folks, & after a few years sold their homestead quarter at Donnybrook.

Louise was only 15 years old when her mother died of cancer & Louise had to take over the housekeeping for her father & brother Charley. Mrs. Philipp (Eva Elizabeth) Kuntz is buried in the Donnybrook Cemetery.

Eventually all of the Philipp Kuntz families went to California, except Henry?s family. Father Philipp & Louise moved there in 1919. She later married Roger (Scotty) Martin & lived on a farm near Patterson. Alice & Carolina settled in or near Patterson when they moved to California, & Mr. Kuntz lived with his daughters in his old age. His grave is in the Patterson Cemetery. Carolina & Louise?s families are still living in that area. Charley Kuntz married Lydia Witte & they lived in Anaheim where he worked for the city street maintenance department.

The only one of the Philipp Kuntz Sr. that is still living is Philipp who lives in Woodland, CA. His 4 sons are also in that part of CA as are the sons & daughters of Louise Kuntz.
