History of Huntington County (Indiana), 1914, p810-811 Jacob Karst, whose labor has been the measure of his success, has for some years been numbered among the prosperous agriculturalists of Lancaster township. Years ago he started his operations with no capital save energy, determination, an active body and a strong mind; today he is the owner of 200 acres of valuable land lying five and one-half miles southwest of Huntington. He is, moreover, a citizen who has gained the trust and confidence of his fellow men through a life of industry and integrity, so that he figures prominently in public as well as agricultural circles of his section. Mr. Karst was born in Hancock county, Ohio, April 24, 1852, and is a son of Peter and Anna (Zeigler) Karst. Peter Karst was born in Germany, and as a young man decided to cast his lot with the citizens of the United States, of whose country he heard such glowing tales. Accordingly, he came to this country, and after a short stay in New York, his landing point, made his way to Pennsylvania, where he met and married Anna Zeigler, a native of the Keystone state. Subsequently, they moved on to Hancock county, Ohio, then to Henry county, Indiana, and finally to Huntington county, this state, and in the Spring of 1865 located in Polk township, where Mr. Karst continued to be engaged in agricultural pursuits throughout the balance of his life. He was the father of five sons and four daughters, and of these children four are living in 1913: Peter, who is a resident of Huntington, Indiana; Jacob; Barney W., a resident of Montana; and Sylvester, whose home is in Polk township. Jacob Karst received his education in the schools of Ohio and Indiana, in the vicinities in which the family lived from time to time. He was a lad of thirteen years when brought to Huntington county, and here he assisted his father in the cultivation of the home property, growing up to sturdy manhood and learning thoroughly every branch of the farming industry. He remained as his father?s assistant until he was twenty-seven years of age, and during this time, through industry and right living, through thrift, economy and good management, he saved some $1,200. Deciding to establish a home of his own, he was married in 1879 to Miss Mary B. Miller, of Huntington township, and they began housekeeping on the farm on which they now reside, and on which they have continued to live with the exception of three years when Mr. Karst was looking after the old homestead. The present property of 200 acres has been accumulated by steady industry, and has been brought to a high state of cultivation. Its buildings are substantial and modern in character, its improvements of the best and its machinery of the latest manufacture. The sleek, well-fed and content livestock testifies to Mr. Karst?s abilities as a raiser of cattle, horses and hogs. Mr. and Mrs. Karst are consistent members of the Catholic church of Sts. Peter and Paul at Huntington, and he is affiliated with the Knights of Columbus and St. Joseph?s Society. He is a democrat in politics, but has never found time for public office, and had he done so it is doubtful if his quiet and unassuming nature would have allowed him to accept preferment. Mr. and Mrs. Karst have been the parents of twelve children, of whom ten survive in 1913: Anna, who is the wife of Edward Morris, of Fort Wayne, Indiana; Florence, who married John Blomeke, of Steuben county, Indiana; Edward J., who is married to Anna Scher and resides in Lancaster township; George, of Lancaster township, who married Edith Scher; and Joseph, Mary, Julius, Jacob, Jr., Catherine, and Vergelia, all single and residing at home with their parents.

Jacob married Maria Barbara Miller on 27 Nov 1879 in SS Peter & Paul Church, Huntington, Huntington County, Indiana, USA. Maria (daughter of Balthasar Müller Miller and Elisabetha Holzinger) was born on 8 Mar 1857 in Huntington, Huntington County, Indiana, USA; died on 4 Jan 1919 in Huntington, Huntington County, Indiana, USA; was buried in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Huntington, Huntington County, Indiana, USA. Peter Karst was born one of twins in the Grand Duchy of Hessen Darmstadt near Bingen, Germany on November 4, 1816. He was baptized at Sts. Philip and Jacob Church in Badenheim, Germany as were the rest of his paternal family. He was the first of the family to come to America, arriving at New York in October 1842 aboard the ship Baltimore unaccompanied by any relative. After a short stay in New York, he moved on to Reading, Pennsylvania where he secured employment as a farm laborer. Initially he received $4.00 per month for his work, and was later given a raise to $6.00 per month. From these small earnings he managed to start a home of his own. Peter Karst married Anna S. Zeigler in approximately 1844. She was a native of Pennsylvania and a member of the Lutheran Church until the spring of 1865, at which time she became a Catholic. On June 29, 1849 Peter Karst?s paternal family, Mr. and Mrs. Martin A. Karst and family immigrated to America. Only Peter?s twin brother, John, remained in Germany until late in 1849 when he also came to America. An uncle and Aunt, Peter and Elizabeth (Bosseng) Karst and family, also arrived at New York on the same ship with his parents June 1849. After a short stay at Reading, Pa., the three families moved to Hancock County, Ohio. Peter and Anna (Zeigler) Karst had two children, Peter P., and Mary A., at that time. In Eagle Township, south of Findlay, Peter resumed his agricultural pursuits with his father and uncle. By 1862, six additional children were born to Peter and Anna. In that year they moved from their home in Union Twp. of Hancock County to a farm near New Bavaria in Pleasant Twp. in Henry County Ohio. Also, Barney, and a daughter, Helen, were born during their tenure in Pleasant Twp. In the spring of 1865 the family moved from New Bavaria to Polk Twp. in Huntington County, Indiana. During the move, their youngest child, Helen, was killed in an accidental fall from a wagon in Huntington County. Peter Karst purchased a 160 acre farm approximately six and one half miles southwest of Huntington. The land consisted of heavy timber and swamp. Later he bought two additional 80 acre tracts, a 40 acre tract, and a 30 acre tract. He ditched them all with wooden planks and made them useful for agriculture. He built a store on the corner of his farm. The place was called Harlansburg. A man by the name of Harlan owned a sawmill there.
