Harold L. Stroklund, 93, Minot, ND, passed away Thursday, January 25, 2018, surrounded by members of his loving family at Trinity Hospital in Minot.
Harold Leonard Stroklund was born March 19, 1924, the son of Oscar Leonard and Emma Louise (Feldner) Stroklund, in Coulee, ND. He was raised and educated in the Donnybrook/Kenmare area. Due to finances, he quit school and moved to Minot in 1941, where he went to work at the Waverly Hotel as a bell hop. It was in Minot, where he met his future wife, Kathryn Matzdorf in October of 1941. In May of 1942, he moved to the West Coast and worked at the shipyards in Bremerton, WA.
Harold married Kathryn ?Kay? Matzdorf November 14, 1943, in Donnybrook, ND. Harold enlisted in the United States Navy April 28, 1944, in Minneapolis, MN. They spent two years in Washington and California during WWII. He proudly served his country during WWII on the USS Tryon, the ?South Pacific Express?, in the West Pacific Theatre. He was honorably discharged January 20, 1946.
In 1946, they returned to Minot, where they purchased a duplex, with the money they had saved, and started their family. He and his brother-in-law Cliff attained their GED?s in 1952 and he then worked as a journeyman in refrigeration. Later he worked at Sears and then the US Post Office as a civil service employee from 1954-58. He worked at Minot Post Office during the day and at night he was a welder for Peter Kiewit and Sons Construction until 1959, at the MAFB, while they were constructing the runways and taxiways. In 1957, he was the fourth civilian hired at the MAFB, he then worked various positions within the Base Civil Engineering Squadron at MAFB. He retired as the CE Deputy Chief of Operations & Maintenance from 1967-78. He always wanted to return to his roots, so he maintained a relationship with the land; he farmed his brother, Alvin?s land, for the next two years. With each of his sons, during his retirement years, he built and/or remodeled their homes.
Through the service and love of their country, Harold developed and maintained friendships during WWII with those he served with. Their families grew to have close relationships that lasted throughout his life.
During the Minot flood of 1969, he and his handpicked crew sited 110 mobile homes (FEMA) in the Minot area.
He and Kay were charter members of Little Flower Catholic Church in Minot. Harold was active in the removal and preparation for construction of the Little Flower School. Throughout the years, he was active in the Knights of Columbus, Holy Name Society, the Bishop Ryan Carnival, and Bishop Ryan Fair Booth at the ND State Fair. As a volunteer, Harold maintained the heating system at the Little Flower School and Church. As a behind the scenes Høstfest volunteer, he delivered Hostfest fliers to 4 states and 2 Canadian Provinces for 20 years. Harold was also a lifetime member in the American Legion and the VFW.
Harold?s deep desire for family and community support led him to his involvement in the Moose Organization. He was a very active member of the Moose Lodge in Minot, where he organized numerous fund-raising feeds and was noted for his ability to sell the Moose Convention pamphlet advertising, and held many offices, both local and national. This culminated with his conferral into the Moose Pilgrim Degree of Merit.
Harold was a man who was loved by many and he loved them all back but he had a special place in his heart for his wife and best friend, Kathryn. Sadly, the love of his life passed away May 30, 1998. The family was worried that Harold?s heart was broken and he would never be the same but in June of 1999, Harold found himself searching for an old friend, Laverna. Laverna brought back a twinkle to Harold?s eyes and a desire to step back into life again. In 2002, Harold married Laverna (Schick) Kramlich at Little Flower Catholic Church, Minot. Laverna passed away December 11, 2016.
One of Harold?s favorite things to do was travel. Harold was proud of his travels that led him to visit all 48 of the lower states, Hawaii, Guam, and 5 Canadian Provinces. Upon returning from a trip to Branson, MO, he suggested to the Høstfest staff that they try to bring Daniel O?Donnell in, which they eventually were successful with. During his travels he would visit family and friends and attend Moose functions, where he made new friends and acquaintances. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, gardening, canning, cooking, painting free hand and elaborate paint by number scenes, and sharing a good joke with family and friends.
His loving family includes: sons, Bruce (Sandy) Stroklund, Minot, Alan (Joann) Stroklund, West Point, IA, Ken (June) Stroklund, Minot, and Paul (Pam) Stroklund, Minot; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; step-children, Pamela (Roy) Cantu, San Ramon, CA, Linda (Paul) Willis, Skamania, WA, Mark Kramlich, El Sobrante, CA, Paul Kramlich, Albany, CA, and Debbie Kramlich, Brentwood, CA; sister-in-law, Irene Spratt, Minot; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
