Verna Koerner, age 82, of Huron, SD, died Friday, March 2, 2012, at SunQuest Healthcare Center in Huron.
Her funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 10, at United Parish of Alpena Church with burial in Rest Haven Cemetery, Alpena.
Visitation with family present will be Friday from 6-8 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m.; or Saturday morning one hour prior to the service at the church.
Verna Koerner was born Verna Irene Teveldal, daughter of Peder and Ida (Pederson) Teveldal, on March 26, 1929, at Alpena, SD. She attended country school through the 8th grade, and her high school years at Virgil and Alpena, graduating from Alpena High School.
Verna moved to Huron and lived with her sister, Edna, while working at Huron Cleaners.
On December 3, 1949, Verna married Leo Koerner in Huron. During her married years she was a homemaker raising and caring for her family in addition to working on the family farm along with her husband. She spent most of her life in the Alpena area except for the 2 years that she lived in Huron prior to her marriage.
She was a member of the United Parish of Alpena Church, and attended First United Methodist Church in Huron in her later years. Her family was paramount in her life and thoroughly enjoyed the time that she could spend with her grand- and great grandchildren. Her many interests included fishing/camping, playing cards, traveling, crafts, crocheting, watching sports on television and attending family music concerts and sporting events, and hosting family gatherings. She worked for many years in various areas at the South Dakota State Fair.
She is survived by her husband, Leo of Huron; 3 children, Tonya (Brian) Whitmore of Huron, Terry Koerner of Alpena, and Todd Koerner of Alpena; 5 grandchildren, Tasha (Rob) Stahl, Matt (Heather) Whitmore, Felishia Koerner, Michelle Whitmore, and Jennifer Koerner; 3 great grandchildren, Jaylin Koerner, Summer Stahl, and Autumn Stahl; 2 brothers, Ole (Liz) Teveldal of Wessington Springs, and Ivan Teveldal of Tulare; 4 sisters, Pearl Krog of Wessington Springs, Leona (Russell) Hansen of Sioux Falls, Lila (Doc) Kludt of Watertown, and Deloris Schaffer of Huron; 2 sisters-in-law, Agnes Teveldal of Huron, and Luella Teveldal of Wessington Springs; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ida and Peder Teveldal; 1 son, Tim Koerner; 2 brothers, Lloyd Teveldal and Leonard Teveldal; 1 sister, Edna Brandenburg; 3 brothers-in-law, Dick Krog, Al Schaffer, and Harold Brandenburg; and 2 sisters-in-law, Vernice Teveldal, and Glenda Teveldal.
