Bender, longtime Elgin businessman, passed away April 13, 1989 following a two week hospitalization. The funeral was held April 17th at Hope Conservative Congregational Church. Interment was made in the church cemetery. His grandsons, served as casket-bearers, were Clare and Daryl Hochhalter, Jerry Lee, Berwyn Brucks, Owen Stockdill, Al Roehrich, Corey Scheidt, Mike Breidenbach, Don Desrosiers and Dana Bender. The funeral arrangements were entrusted to Evanson Jensen Funeral Home in Elgin. Ruben was born on December 30, 1909 at Eureka, South Dakota to Christina (Werre) and John Bender. The family moved to Elgin when he was an infant. He grew up and received his education in Elgin. He worked with his father in one of Elgin's first General Merchandise stores. He married Lillian Quast at Elgin on August 29, 1931. He was a partner with Arnold Meyer in the operation of Meyer-Bender Hardware and Funeral Home. He sold his interest to his partner and went into the tavern and restaurant business. After the death of his wife on May 13, 1979 he retired. Surviving are one daughter, Corine (Mrs. Fred) Hochhalter of Jamestown; two sons, Clifford of Davis, CA and Dennis of Yakima, WA; eleven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; Two sisters, Florence (Mrs. Harry) Reich of Catonement, FL and Hilda Miller of California.
