Orval Adolph Elting, the son of Henry Elting and Frieda Lueders Elting, was born on Sept. 4, 1922, at Carleton. He died Feb. 11, 1996, in Hebron at Thayer County Memorial Hospital at the age of 73.
He was baptized into the Christian faith on Sept. 19, 1922, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Friedensau, by the Rev. H. Schabacker and was confirmed on May 24, 1936, at Trinity Lutheran by the Rev. Theo Droegemueller. He attended the Friedensau North School through the eighth grade and graduated from Carleton High School in 1940.
He worked in Iowa picking corn around the state and then went to western Kansas doing general farming. On Sept. 1, 1944,
Orval enlisted in the United States Navy at Farragut ID where he completed his basic training. In December of 1944 he was stationed in San Bruno CA where he received his advanced training. After he completed his length of duty, Orval volunteered for duty at Operation Crossroads at Bikini Atoll in March of 1946 and witnessed the atomic bomb test. He was honorably discharged with a rank of Mailman 3rd Class on Nov. 20, 1946, at San Pedro CA.
On Nov. 14, 1948, he was united in marriage to Esther C. Krueger at St. Paul Lutheran south of Gilead. The couple farmed and raised livestock in the Davenport area until his death.
He enjoyed collecting and refinishing antiques and preserving family genealogy. He was a past member of the Thayer County Livestock Feeders Association, Carleton American Legion and served various offices in his lifelong church, Trinity Lutheran at Friedensau. He was a current member of the Davenport V.F.W. and a charter member of the Thayer County Genealogical Society.
Preceding him in death were his parents; a brother Vernon and his wife Margaret; a sister, Edna Hadden; brothers-in-law, John Mette and Lou Muhar.
Orval is survived by his wife Esther of Davenport; one son, Kurtis and his wife Susan of Davenport and their two sons, Reuben and Remington; one daughter, Katie Templin of York and her two sons, Levi and Briar; two sisters, Leona Dunker and her husband Henry of Burbank CA and Florence Muhar of Sterling CO; three brothers, Glenn and his wife Esther of Davenport, Leonard and his wife Lorna of Hebron and Dwayne and his wife Beverly of Carleton; an aunt, HIldagarde Euhus and her husband Henry; a bother-in-law, Wilke Hadden of Palo Alto CA; other relatives and friends.
Services were held Feb. 15 at 2 p.m. from Trinity Lutheran Church at Friedensau, rural Hebron, with Pastor Duane Simonson officiating. Music was "Nearer My God To Thee" and "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" sang by the congregation and accompanied by Florine Meyer and "How Great Thou Art" by Bob O'Neal on guitar as soloist.
Pallbearers were Doug Elting, Tom Mette, Perry Elting, Scott Elting, Tracy Elting and Jonathan Vortman. Interment with military rites was in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery at rural Hebron. Memorials may go to the church or family choice. Price Funeral Home, Hebron and Davenport, in charge of arrangements.
