Myra Minnette Childs Byrd, 101, a native of Opelousas and resident of Houma since 1998, passed away Friday, Dec. 19, 2014.
At Myra's request, her body was donated to Tulane Medical School. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, in the Louisiana Memorial United Methodist Church at 515 Bellevue Street in Opelousas.
She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Byrd Corte and husband, Bobby; grandchildren, Kim Corte Sanvi and husband, Dennis, Bobby Joe Corte and wife, Ginny, and Kane and Chris Corte; 11 great-grand children; one great-great-grandson; and brother, George Creighton Childs, of Baton Rouge.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Luther Morris Byrd, of Tylertown, Mississippi; parents, Nathan Marion Childs and Asa Pulford Childs; sisters, Agusta Childs Rose and Hattie Miller Childs; brothers, Nathan Marrion Childs Jr., Louis Pulford Childs, John Asa Childs; and twin sisters, Johnnie Pulford Clark Morningveg and Edwina Pulford Clark Stagg.
Myra was a graduate of Opelousas High School and South Western University, where she received a degree in Sociology. She then pursued her Master's degree on a scholarship at Tulane University.
She was employed by the Louisiana Welfare Department her entire career; first as a welfare visitor then as Supervisor of Child Welfare for St. Landry Parish.
She was a devout member of the Louisiana Memorial United Methodist Church of Opelousas, the Methodist Women's Association and a longtime member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority.
The family would like to thank her wonderful sitters who took such good care of her and Haydel Hospice for all their help.
