Milton Mickeal "Mike" Oertel, the youngest of four children of Mary Elizabeth (Sells) and John William Oertel, was born in Davenport, Iowa on May 24, 1953. Mike lived in Davenport with his parents and sisters Betty and Deloras and brother Billy. He was ten years old when he moved to the Glenwood State Hospital School in Glenwood, Iowa on January 2, 1964.
Mike was well known at the Resource Center for his great smile. He was always happy and served as the house's unofficial greeter with a welcoming handshake or pat on the back to visitors. Mike loved the color blue and was always ready for an outing or dinner out.
Mike died at the Jennie Edmundson Memorial Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa on January 3, 2006 at the age of 52 years, 7 months, and 9 days. He was preceded in death by his father and is survived by his mother Mary E. Chambers and her husband Max of Del City, Okalahoma; sisters Betty Stafford and her husband Gary of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and Deloras Theys and her husband Michael of Plano, Texas; brother Billy Oertel and his wife Linda of Durant, IA; half-sisters Barbara Nessel and her husband Dave of Oklahoma City, and Edith Ann Rice of Davenport, IA; half-brothers Jim Decker of Bettendorf, IA, Lee Chambers of Oklahoma City; nieces and nephews; and his Glenwood Resource Center Family.
