Homer Chester Ludwig
Homer Chester ?Burrhead? Ludwig, 79, of Elizabeth, passed away Friday, June 6, 2008, after a short illness. He was born in Sandyville July 23, 1928, the son of the late McKinley and Genieve Morgan Ludwig.
He was a 1947 graduate of Wirt County High School. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Wright (CVL) 1947 to 1950. He was a member and trustee of the Elizabeth Baptist Church. Retired from the Boilermakers in 1990, he received his 55-year pin from Boilermakers Union 667, Winfield. He was a member of the Elizabeth Eastern Stars # 113, received his 50 year pin, was treasurer and Past Master of Wirt Masonic Lodge #82, Scottish Rites, American Legion Post 55, member of the Junior Order of American Mechanics, past member of the Jaycees of Elizabeth, past member of the Elizabeth Voluntary Fire Department, past member of the Elizabeth Town Council, founder of the Oak Hill and Center Hill school reunions, member of the Roane County, Calhoun County and Wirt County Historical Society. He was awarded the West Virginia Hero Award March 2, 2000, at the Cultural Center in Charleston, was selected by the local historical society for his tireless efforts to preserve the history of the Wirt County Schools (History of the one-room schools in Wirt County). Chester helped with the Band Boosters, the Athletic Association and helped put up the first electric score board at the Wirt County High football field. He was a volunteer of GAP at Elizabeth Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Patricia Ludwig; son, Mark (Robin) Ludwig of Newark; daughter, Suellen (Michael) Calebaugh of Elizabeth; six grandchildren, Lt. Commander Laurie (Pete) Basabe of Oceanside, Calif., Daniel (Lisa) Ludwig of Elizabeth, Natalie (Rob) Casto of Barboursville, David Calebaugh of Elizabeth and (friend Megan Stickley), and Zach Gohn and Amanda Gohn of Newark; great-grandchildren, Trinity and Connor Casto of Barboursville; extended family, Rodney and Beth Settles of Elizabeth and Sarah, David, Marian, and Luke Smith of Elizabeth; and his cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
The funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Elizabeth Baptist Church with the Rev. Mark McCloy and the Rev. Casey Stienspring officiating.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. this evening at the funeral home and from 10 a.m. Monday at the church until the time of the service.
Memorial donations may be made to GAP (God Answers Prayer), Elizabeth Baptist Church.
Masonic graveside service and interment will be at the Knights of Pythias Cemetery, Elizabeth.
Arrangements are by Matheny Whited Funeral Home of Elizabeth.
