Henry died July 11, 2016 at Eureka Community Hospital.
Henry was born on June 5, 1931 to Henry and Margret (Ehrman) Oster, Sr. at his family home in Campbell County, South Dakota. As a child, he attended country school and later graduated from Eureka High School in 1949. After graduating from high school, he served in the United States Army in the post rebuilding of Germany. When he returned home, he married his long time sweetheart, Bernice Hoff, on June 19, 1955. They took over his family farm west of Eureka and expanded it into a cow/calf and feedlot operation. Henry attended Ag School in the evenings in Herreid through the G.I. Bill.
In addition to farming and raising his family, Henry was an active member of the community. He served on the Zion American Lutheran Church board and as a director on the Eureka Equity Exchange board. Henry was a proud recipient of the Outstanding Farmer of the Year Award. Although being a committed farmer consumed much of his time, he and Bernice enjoyed several trips. In his later life, traveling to see his grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought him much joy.
He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Bernice; children, Steve (Debra) Oster, Patricia (Gary) Baule, and Paul (Brenda) Oster; nine grandchildren Michael Baule, Megan (Carlos Toledo) Baule, Rebecca (Aaron) Oster Bach, Diana Oster, Robyn Oster, Nickolas Oster, Melissa Oster, Samuel Oster, and Makenna Oster; three great granddaughters, Camila and Jasmine Baule-Toledo and Eloise Bach; and one sister, Lillian (Ervin) Gebhardt.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Ella Ottenbacher; and two brothers, Herbert and Clarence Oster.
Carlsen Funeral Home of Eureka has been entrusted with arrangements.
