VINCENT - Hayward J. Congleton, 92, of Vincent, Ohio, passed away on Wednesday (Sept. 1, 2010) at Marietta Memorial Hospital.
He was born at Wingett Run (Dalzell area), on Oct. 18, 1917, a son of the late James and Goldie Hendershot Congleton. He attended school at Dalzell and was a retired welder and sheet metal worker with Local Union 33 of Parkersburg. He was an excellent welder and received many awards and retired from Dupont. He was also a dairy farmer in the Dalzell area along with his wife Elwanda. He later lived on Wynncrest Drive in Marietta. Hayward enjoyed hunting, especially coon and deer, playing pool, bowling, square and round dancing, especially hoedowning the "Rocky Top." He would go dancing in Marietta, Parkersburg and Beverly areas and enjoyed being with his many dancing friends. He also enjoyed playing the harmonica for his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Hayward was married to Gertrude Elwanda Binegar Congleton who preceded him in death on Nov. 27, 1993. He is survived by one daughter, Judith Congleton of Vincent and four grandchildren, Kelly (Michael) Pahl of Bartlett, Misty (Kris) Anderson of Barlow, Shannon (Amanda) Reynolds of Vincent, Autumn (Timothy) Stacy of Barlow; great-grandchildren, Rachael, Kayla, and Brandon Pahl of Bartlett, Taylor Anderson of Barlow, Logan, Justin, and Cassie Reynolds of Vincent; stepgreat-grandchildren, Missy (Shane) Zoller and Nick Anderson, both of Marietta. Also surviving are three sisters, Velma (Glenn) King of Dayton, Violia (Carl) Ward of Marietta, Mary (Earl) Jones of Canton; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his brother, John "Jake" Congleton; and sister, Mildren (Carl) Riemenschneider.
Funeral services will be held on Friday (Sept. 3) at 11 a.m. at McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. on Thursday. Burial will be in East Lawn Memorial Park.
