LEXINGTON: Grace Leona Vanderbilt Walter, 82, of Plymouth Street, Lexington, died Thursday, December 20, 2007 in Cape Coral Hospital, Cape Coral, Florida following a long illness.
She was born July 1, 1925 in Lexington to John L. and Bernice (Chance) Vanderbilt, and was graduated from Lexington High School in 1943.
A lifelong Lexington area resident, Grace married Roy E. Walter on October 24, 1943.
She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Ashland University in 1969, and had taught first grade numerous years in the Johnsville Elementary School. Generous and loving, she embraced the developmental, emotional and physical needs of her students. Grace stocked her classroom closet with extra school supplies, shoes, gloves and stockings, and when she identified a need, quietly fulfilled it.
When the concept of phonics was introduced into Ohio schools, Grace criss-crossed the state training Superintendents, principals and teachers this new model of learning.
She was former president of the Morrow County Teachers Association, a member of the Ohio and Morrow County Retired Teachers Associations, and Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority.
So dedicated to her pupils and their success, Grace taught summer school in the basement of her home for years, for as many as 16 students at a time, and always at no charge.
Grace was a member of Bellville Chapter Order of Eastern Star.
A gifted artist, she painted in most mediums: oil, watercolors and acrylics. A talented seamstress and needle worker, Grace crocheted numerous afghans, lap robes, and slippers, all without patterns.
Her creativity, and ability to spot a bargain combined for the inception of her “Lady Grace Craft Shop.” Grace held so many garage sales, they kind of blended into one really long garage sale!
Grace had been an active volunteer with the Volunteers of America. While her husband was chairman of the Board of VOA, Grace was active in the Auxiliary assisting with the food bank and operating the summer Bible school program.
She was active with the Richland County Fair Board Auxiliary, and loved to be at the fairgrounds. You could always find Grace at Fairgrounds events, and could chat-up any soul. She was a member of the Plymouth Tractor Association, and the Good Sam Travel Club.
Grace was a former member of Lexington Presbyterian Church, Johnsville Grace United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school and vacation Bible school, United Methodist Church of the Cross in Lexington, and was currently a member of Plymouth United Methodist Church.
For the past 16 years, she and Roy have wintered in North Fort Myers, Florida, where she was an associate member of United Methodist Church of North Fort Myers.
A Cleveland Indians Baseball and Ohio State Buckeyes Football fan, in recent years, she never missed watching a game.
Described as having nine lives, Grace had survived breast cancer for over 23 years, as well as a few motorcycle incidents.
Grace was blessed with a humble spirit, and never felt as though she contributed much to this world, yet her humor and her teaching, and character leave a tremendous legacy.
A beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, she is survived by her husband of 64 years Roy E. Walter, five children and their spouses Valerie Walter of Ontario, Terry and Ellen Walter of Lexington, Paula and Kenny Clagg of Mansfield, Roy Alex and Debbie Walter of Lexington, and John Walter of North Fort Myers, Florida; a daughter-in-law Darlene Walter of Mansfield; thirteen grandchildren Crissy Walter of Mansfield, Matthew & Andrea Walter of Ontario, Daryk McCoy of Astoria, Oregon, Tara Harvey and Shevan Walter both of Lexington, Greg & Debbie Clagg of Shelby, Michelle Clagg of Miamisburg, Casey & Ryan Weaver of Shelby, Ben Walter and Zach Walter both of Lexington, Johnna and Bobby Young of Mansfield, Jennifer Walter and Brook Walter both of Mansfield; 11 great grandchildren, sisters and a brother-in-law Dorothy Vanderbilt Doudna of Lexington, Maxine and Richard Meredith and Regina Vanderbilt Sand all of Mansfield; a brother-in-law Carl Noblet of Bellville; and numerous nieces and nephews and extended family members.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son Daryl E. “Bud” Walter; a brother Johnny R. Vanderbilt; a sister Patricia Vanderbilt Noblet; brothers-in-law Charlie Doudna and Dave Sand; and her step mother Betty J. Shepherd Vanderbilt.
The family will receive friends Thursday, December 27, 2007 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home, where the funeral service will be held Friday at 11 AM. Pastors Mark Reep and Jim Streib will officiate. Burial will follow in Lexington Cemetery.
Memorial contributions to the Plymouth United Methodist Church may be made at the funeral home.
