Gordon Francis 'Sarge' Brooks, age 82, of West Michigan Street, passed from the loving arms of his family to the loving arms of his Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, November 30, 2002, in St.
Gordon Francis 'Sarge' Brooks, age 82, of West Michigan Street, passed from the loving arms of his family to the loving arms of his Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, November 30, 2002, in St. Luke's Hospice. Gordy grew up and attended schools in the Central Hillside neighborhood of Duluth, and graduated from Duluth Central High School in 1939. He exaggerated his age and enlisted in the Army National Guard, 125th Field Artillery, 34th Division. He was activated to regular Army Service while training at Camp Clairborne, Louisiana, on December 7, 1941. He was a Staff Sergeant and received the Soldiers Medal for Heroism. He was credited with saving the lives of several wounded soldiers and received the Bronze Star, and the Purple Heart, among other ribbons and awards. He served in North Africa and Italy. He married Theo L. Chillquist in Denver, Colorado, in 1944, while recovering from wounds received at the battle of Monte Casino, Italy. After discharge from the Army in 1945, he and Theo moved to Duluth. Following employment at Klearfax Linen Mills, he was employed as a Loan Officer for St. Louis County Federal Savings and Loan Association. After 28 years of service, he was elected President of the Association, later becoming President and CEO of the Board of Directors, retiring in 1986, but continued to serve on the Board of Directors. Following retirement, he and Theo moved to lake Beauregard, in Barnes, Wisconsin. They moved back to Duluth in 1996. He was involved in numerous local, state, regional and federal savings and loan and banking organizations. He testified before Congress and was appointed to a Presidential Committee on housing. He was instrumental in the planning and building of Senior Citizen High-Rise apartments, served on the Model Cities Redevelopment Plan for the City of Duluth, HUD Board, and housing for disabled veterans. He was a member of, or actively involved, in many organizations including the Elks, Lion's Club, Toastmaster's, American Legion, T.W. Hugo Masonic Lodge, and was a life member of the D.A.V. and the V.F.W. He was a member of the Barnes Community Church in Barnes, Wisconsin. He was a Duluth Hall of Fame recipient in 1981. He volunteered his time and expertise willingly to many organizations. Gordon was preceded in death by his parents, George and Gertrude Brooks; his wife Theo L. Brooks in 2001; a brother, George Brooks; a sister, Grace Nelson; and an infant granddaughter, Jenney Rebecca Davis. He is survived by his son, Barry and Ann Brooks; daughters Carol Jean Brooks, Susan and Rudy Wiitanen, all of Duluth; Catherine and Ted Main of Naperville, Illinois; eleven grandchildren, and was expecting his twelfth great-grandchild; as well as many caring relatives and friends, especially his breakfast buddies at Porters and the Saturday lunch bunch at the Pickwick who enriched his life greatly these last few years. VISITATIONon Tuesday, December 3, 2002, from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Johnson Crawford Chapel, now located at 514 East Third Street. Visitation on Wednesday, December 4, 2002, at 10:00 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. funeral service at the Barnes Community Church in Barnes, Wisconsin. Interment in Highland Memorial Cemetery located in Highland Township, Wisconsin. In lieu of flowers (Gordy was allergic to them) memorials may be made to the Duluth Combined Honor Guard and/or the Barnes Community Church. Arrangements are by Johnson Crawford Funeral Service.
