Gary Oberlander, 72, Mandan, died Jan. 18, 2014, at his residence. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, with the Rev. Lee Herberg officiating.
Visitation will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at Weigel Funeral Home.
Gary was born on Nov. 11, 1941, to Emil and Emma (Dockter) Oberlander in Streeter. Gary attended school in Lake Preston, S.D.; later receiving his GED and then his degree in civil engineering. Gary worked for the North Dakota Department of Transportation as a civil engineer his entire career prior to retiring in 2006.
Gary met Susan Renner in Bismarck and they married on Jan. 27, 1991, in Mandan. They made their home in Mandan. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing especially with his outdoor companions: Rick and Russell. Gary was a good cook and made many dishes that his family enjoyed. He was also a history buff and spent time researching the history of Gen. Custer and World War II, he also enjoyed gardening and bird watching. He especially enjoyed spending time with his granddaughter, Kali.
Gary will be deeply missed by his wife, Susan; his step-daughter, Lori Ihli, Rapid City, S.D.; his granddaughter, Kali Sue Ihli, Rapid City, S.D.; his sister, Bernice Schaffer, Jamestown; his sister-in-law, Beverly Kinzler, Larimore; his sister-in-law, Donna (David) Dombrowsky, Mandan; his brother-in-law, Robert (Sue) Renner, The Villages, Fla.; his sister-in-law, Bridget Renner, Fallbrook, Calif.; special nephew, Rick (Margaret) Oberlander, Bismarck; special friends, Russell (Marsha) Dittus, Mandan, Michael Moszer Sr., and Michael Moszer Jr., both of Rapid City; and several nieces and nephews.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Marvin and Donald; his brother-in-law, Roger Renner; and a nephew, Scott.
In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred.
