Gladys Marcella Wanner, 81, of Aberdeen, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on Thursday, December 1, 2016, at her residence.
Her memorial service will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, December 5, 2016, at Zion Lutheran Church, 1732 South Main St., Aberdeen, with Pastor Marcia Sylvester officiating.
A luncheon and time of fellowship will immediately follow the service at the church fellowship hall.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. No visitation will take place at the mortuary.
Gladys Marcella (Treftz) Wanner was born on January 15, 1935, to William and Emma (Schnabel) Treftz in Eureka, SD. The family lived on a farm in the Hosmer, SD, area until her father passed away. Then Gladys, along with her sister, moved in with their grandparents and lived on their farm in Eureka while their mother was ill. Later, her mother married John Denning and the family made their home on a farm northwest of Ashley, ND.
In December of 1950, Gladys met the love of her life, Harvey Wanner. It was love at first sight and Harvey knew he wanted her to be his wife. Three months later, on March 12, 1951, Gladys and Harvey were united in marriage in Hot Springs, SD. The couple lived in Igloo, SD until Harvey was drafted into the military. Their first child was born in Eureka. In 1953, the family moved to Aberdeen and the couple was blessed with seven more children, completing the family of three sons and five daughters. Gladys loved being a mother and always said her children were the best thing that ever happened to her. In addition to being a wife, mother, and homemaker, Gladys also found employment in food service, in retail at Feinstein’s in Aberdeen, driving truck with her husband Harvey, and as a nurse’s aid. She especially loved helping others and caring for the sick, which she did until 2004, when she retired due to health issues. Gladys moved to the Homestead Apartments in 2003, where she continued to reside until the time of her death.
Gladys was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Aberdeen. She will always be remembered as a classy, strong, woman whose priority was always her family. She had impeccable style. Gladys always looked her best, sometimes taking over an hour to get ready, and her clothes and makeup showed that and were always perfect. She was a great cook, and German food was her specialty. Gladys also baked many wonderful treats for her large family as well. In her spare time, she loved reading, gardening, dancing, and playing Bingo, as well as fishing, hunting, and bowling. Most of all, Gladys loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Grateful to have shared in Gladys’ life is her husband of 66 1/2 years, Harvey Wanner of Aberdeen; her children: Lonna Wanner of Aberdeen, Craig (Laurann) Wanner of St. Charles, MO, Perry (Connie Nelson) Wanner of Windsor, CO, Pam Sop of Lockwood, CA, Reverend Robin Wanner-Schaunaman of Aberdeen, Scott (Karen) Wanner of Monticello, MN, and Rebecca (David) Glasford-Stangl of Shoreview, MN; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one sister, Bernice Diede of Hill City, MN; three half-siblings: Glenn (Vi) Denning and Carl (Pat) Denning of Aberdeen and Geraldine Berkholz of Minneapolis, MN; one step-brother, Norman (Sharon) Denning of Aberdeen; and numerous other step-siblings.
Gladys is preceded in death by her daughter, Bonnie; great-grandson, William Petersen; her parents, Emma and William; one sister in infancy; son-in-law, Todd Glasford; brothers-in-law, John Diede and Jack Berkholz; sister-in-law, Sally Denning; and numerous step siblings.
Gladys’ family wishes to thank Dr. Lyle Biegler, Avera Hospice, staff of the Don and Carmen Meyer Center for Excellence Infusion Department and the staff of ManorCare Health Services for the excellent care given to Gladys throughout the years.
