- [S927] Obituary.
MARTIN (Menkel) Genevieve Carmen Menkel Martin, age 75, died peacefully in her sleep, with family at her bedside, Monday, March 3, 2003 at Monterey Care Center, Grove City, Ohio, after a lengthy illness. Genevieve was born April 1, 1927 in Woodsfield (Monroe County) Ohio, the eldest of 3 children, where she played the Glockenspiel in the Woodsfield High School Marching Band and was the Salutatorian of the Woodsfield High School Class of 1944. At the time of her graduation, Genevieve received special honors for perfect school attendance throughout both her primary and secondary years of education. After High School graduation she moved to the Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio, for one year, working as a Secretary to assist in the war effort. Genevieve then moved to Columbus, Ohio and entered the White Cross Hospital School of Nursing where she graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1948. She devoted the majority of her nearly 50-year Nursing career to the care of premature newborn infants, her "premies", while working for White Cross Hospital, Riverside Methodist Hospital and St. Ann's Hospital, all in Columbus, Ohio. Upon her "official" retirement from nursing in 1992, she began work with the YMCA as a caregiver for infants and toddlers in the EduCare center at St. Ann's Hospital. Genevieve was a member of Central College Presbyterian Church, Westerville, Ohio, where she served as a Deacon, was a member of the handbell choir, and volunteered her professional services as a Parish Nurse. She was also a member of the Clintonville Women's Club, worked as a Volunteer for the Golden Hobby Shop in German Village and served as the Secretary of the Riverside-White Cross Alumni Association for nearly 30 years. She was an accomplished pianist who entertained her family and friends nearly up until the time of her death. Genevieve loved to travel, stopping at all the gift shops she found, and had most recently visited the Holy Lands and her ancestral Germany. Leisure activities included crocheting and listening to the songbirds at her bird feeders. Her parents, William Henry Menkel and Hulda Elizabeth Peppel Menkel, her sister, Carolyn Loretta Menkel Howell and Wayne Stanley Martin, the father of her 4 children and stepson, preceded her in death. Genevieve is survived by her brother, Charles Franklin Menkel (Janet Rose Schupbach) of Charlotte, North Carolina. All her children survive: daughter, Pamela Ann Martin of Columbus, Ohio, son Douglas Stanley Martin (Nancy Louise King) of Elmira, New York, daughter Julia Ellen Martin Nair of Columbus, Ohio, daughter Lori Martin of Dallas, Texas, and step-son Charles Wayne Martin (Marcia Rose Zbierajewski) of Reno, Nevada. Five grandchildren also survive Grandma Gen: Jacquelyn Ruth Nair of Columbus, Ohio, Ian Douglas Martin and Graham Lewis Martin of Elmira, New York, and Charles Raymond Martin and Paul Wayne Martin of Reno, Nevada. Brother-in-law Rate Andrew Howell, nieces Melanie Sue Howell Pullins, and Jennifer Ann Howell, all of Phoenix, Arizona, niece Barbara Ann Menkel Carter of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and nephew Brian Henry Menkel of Charlotte, North Carolina also mourn her passing. A host of extended family members and a wide circle of lifelong friends also grieve. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests donations be made to the Riverside-White Cross Alumni Association, 4266 Maize Road, Columbus, Ohio, 43224 or to the Alzheimer's Association of Central Ohio, 3380 Tremont Road, Columbus, Ohio, 43221.
