Esther Kathlyn Dalton, 87, of Highmore, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 2004, at Hand County Memorial Hospital in Miller. Funeral services were held February 2 at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Highmore, with Pastor Wendy Popp officiating. Burial was at Highmore City Cemetery. Luze Funeral Home, Highmore, was in charge of arrangements. Esther Kathlyn Rittel was born March 21, 1916, to David and Emma (Hintz) Rittel. Her father died unexpectedly in November 1918, and Esther moved to a farm northwest of Highmore in 1920 when her mother married Andrew J. Goehring. She attended all eight grades at the Lincoln Township rural elementary school. After graduating eighth grade, she helped her mother with the many farm chores and with raising her four younger siblings. She married Harley Francis Dalton on September 27, 1933. They lived on a farm south of Holabird for three years and then moved to Highmore. She was an exceptionally good cook and held several jobs before opening the Korn Krib in 1950. After selling the Krib in 1960, she cooked school lunches at the Highmore School until she retired. She was an active member of Our Savior Lutheran Church and Miriam Circle. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Royal (LaVonne) Kutz of Highmore and Mrs. Darold (Grace) Heckenliable of Madison; two sons, David of Howard and Marvin of West Liberty, Iowa; 15 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Daniel Rittel of Anoka, Minn., and Bernard Goehring of North Highlands, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband and friend, Harley; her parents; three sisters, Adeline, Agnes and Ruth; three brothers, William, Arthur and Raymond; and one grandson, Derrick Dalton.
