Elmer Bender
WASHBURN -- Elmer E. Bender, 74, Washburn, died May 4, 2003, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Washburn United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Gary Geiman officiating. Burial will be in Washburn Baptist Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Goetz Funeral Home, Washburn, and will continue one hour prior to the services at the church.
Elmer Emanuel Bender was born July 7, 1928, at rural Washburn, the son of Julius and Emily (Renner) Bender. He attended rural school and graduated from Washburn High School in 1946. He farmed with his father near Washburn following high school.
He married Marilyn B. Olson on Oct. 15, 1948, in Lisbon. They moved to the Fred Schuler farm northeast of Washburn in the fall of 1955, where they farmed until moving into Washburn in 1970. Elmer independently custom combined from 1967 to 1980, combining as far south as Oklahoma. He continued his farming operations until 1982. He became employed as a farmhand for Lowell Rothman and continued to work up until the time of his death. Marilyn, his wife of 39 years, passed away on Nov. 2, 1987.
Elmer enjoyed listening to music and especially loved playing his harmonica. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He is survived by one son, Richard (Mary) Bender, Mandan; one daughter, Debbie (Martin) Olsen, Mandan; his special loving friend, Elda Link, Washburn; three grandchildren, Kimberly (Mitch) VonBank, Fargo, Stephanie Bender, Bismarck, and Jessica Olsen, Mandan; two great-grandchildren, Jerika and Jada VonBank; two step-grandchildren, Kelly Kraft and Kyle Kraft; two step-great-grandchildren, Ashton and Kyleigh Kraft; two foster daughters, Candace TeBeest, Idaho, and Kathy (Chris) Galde, North Carolina; five foster grandchildren, Londa, Matthew and Tiffany TeBeest, and Miranda and Kyle Galde; one brother, LeRoy (Arlene) Bender, Washburn; one sister, Carol (Stan) Adams, Bismarck; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one daughter, Karen; one grandson, Marc Bender; and two brothers, Jim and Rayland Bender.
