Birth: Apr. 28, 1920Milton-FreewaterUmatilla CountyOregon, USA Death: Oct. 29, 2006Montana, USA Obituary from the Great Falls Tribune, 10/31/2006:Doris "Dode" Whipple, 86, of Great Falls, a homemaker and former Choteau and Hamilton resident, died of natural causes Sunday at Peace Hospice.A memorial service will be held in Choteau at a later date, and burial will take place at Riverview Cemetery in Hamilton. Daly-Leach Chapel of Hamilton and Schnider Funeral Home are in charge of arrangements.Dode is survived by her son, . . . ; and three daughters and sons-in-law, . . . ; 11 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.Doris Elba Waggoner was born at home on April 28, 1920, in Milton-Freewater, Ore. She had an older sister, Phyllis, and an older brother Robert, "Bob." She was nicknamed "Dode" by her family quite early, and that became her name for most people for the rest of her life.She met Nels Whipple in 1935 and they were married in Seattle, Wash., on April 16, 1938. They lived in Seattle until September, 1947, when they loaded all the belongings that would fit in an old 1 1/2- ton truck and moved to a 340-acre farm near Bynum. They lived there until moving to Choteau in 1962. Dode went to work with the Choteau Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS) in 1954, and retired from there in April, 1980.Nels and Dode celebrated their golden anniversary in Choteau in 1988. In 1991, they moved to Hamilton, where Nels died Feb. 29, 1996. Dode moved to Great Falls in January, 2001, and enjoyed the company of other retirees in an independent living facility. She later moved into an assisted living facility and eventually transferred to Peace Hospice.Dode enjoyed being a homemaker and mother, but grandchildren brought an even greater joy into her life. She loved to play games, especially Scrabble and pinochle, with family and friends. She was an active member of United Methodist Church in Choteau for many years. She was also a volunteer at the Teton Memorial Hospital in Choteau and Marcus Daly Hospital in Hamilton. Because of her gentle and compassionate nature, Dode was loved and admired everywhere she lived.In lieu of flowers, the family recommends a donation to the American Parkinson's Disease Association in her memory.Family links: Parents:Virgil Waggoner (1888 - 1944) Elba Grace McGrew Waggoner (1886 - 1935) Spouse:Nelson J.
