Dennis Herrboldt
(Died June 13, 2011)
Dennis Filmore Herrboldt, 65, of Spearfish, SD passed on June 13, 2011 at his home, surrounded by his wife and children, after a brief illness with cancer.
He was born May 13, 1946, in Scotland, SD, the son of Filmore and Verna (Heckenlaible) Herrboldt. On August 26, 1967, he was united in Holy Matrimony with MaryAnn Weier, and their union was blessed with four beautiful children.
His parents instilled in him a deep sense of Christian Faith at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, and this foundation gave him strength throughout his life. He continued this devotion as an active member of the St. Boniface (Idywilde) Catholic community and, then St. Joseph Catholic community until his passing. This importance of Faith was continued as being a vital part of his children and grandchildren’s lives.
Dennis was brought-up on a family farm in rural Freeman, SD. He enjoyed learning about farming with his Grandpa Heckenlaible, who instilled in “Butch” a love of the land and good work ethic at a very young age.
Dennis attended St. Paul’s Lutheran Grade School, Freeman High School, and Yankton College. He was a proud member of the South Dakota National Guard.
Dennis and MaryAnn met at Freeman High School, and they were joined in Holy Matrimony at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Freeman. They were blessed with 4 children, in which they instilled values of faith, family, and friends; he enjoyed and emphasized the importance of this by being present for Sunday Mass and family activities. Dennis, also, demonstrated the importance of family by his love and support of his parents, and MaryAnn’s parents, in times of special needs.
In 1990, Dennis moved his family to Spearfish, where they enjoyed making new friends and a life in the beautiful Black Hills, which he loved.
Dennis was an extremely hard and dedicated worker; he was a natural leader in whatever career path life took him. Throughout his life he made many devoted friends. The value of doing for others, and being a friend, was essential in defining Dennis.
He leaves to enjoy in his memory, his wife, MaryAnn of Spearfish; daughter Amy (Michael Pankratz) of Sioux Falls, SD; son Dean (Tina Hart) of Spearfish; daughter, Gwen (Michael Curran) of Madison, WI; son Brent (April Mertz) of Spearfish; grandchildren, Trey and Mia Herrboldt of Spearfish and Isabella, Sterne, and Lincoln Pankratz of Sioux Falls; mother Verna of Freeman; sister, Kathleen (DeWayne Graber) of Freeman; brother, Daniel (Loy Laber) of Freeman; and a host of family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Filmore and MaryAnn’s parents, Clement and Delores (Healy) Weier.
Many happy memories of Dennis bind us together, and we thank God for blessing us so abundantly. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for St. Joseph’s Catholic Church Building Fund and the LiveStrong Cancer Foundation.
A Wake Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 15, 2011 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Spearfish. The Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church on Thursday, June 16, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. A second Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Boniface Catholic Church, rural Freeman, SD on Saturday, June 18, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. A private interment will be held for the family at St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery.
