Alton A. Herr was born on February 5, 1919 to Adolph and Sarah (Auch) Herr on a farm northeast of Tripp, South Dakota. He attended school at Baltzer School #43. He was baptized and confirmed into the Reformed Church. Alton was united in marriage to Meta Reiner on September 19, 1941 and their union lasted 61 years. They farmed for 47 years until retiring in 1987, when they moved to Tripp. Alton was a faithful and active member of the Reformed Church all of his life. He served as an elder and was on the Cemetery Committee at the time of his death. He also served on the township board, the school board and the elevator board. During his retirement years, he enjoyed working at the Tripp Livestock Market, the Tripp Farmer?s Elevator and helping with Meals on Wheels. Alton enjoyed playing cards with his friends and family and fishing with his family. He died at home on Saturday, April 20, 2002 at the age of 83 years. Grateful for sharing his life are his wife, Meta of Tripp; daughter Carol Newton, Rapid City, South Dakota, granddaughter Sara and husband, Michael Drumheller and grandson Ross and wife, Shannon Newton; son LeRoy and wife, Sharon Newton, Rapid City, granddaughter Kim and husband, Michael Bruns and great-grand- daughter Chloe, granddaughter Tammy and husband, Bruce Smith and great- granddaughter Emma Rae and granddaughter Tracey Herr; son Merlyn and wife Paulette Herr, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, granddaughter Shellette and husband, Brandon Rietz and great-grandchildren Courtney and Alex, granddaughter Jenny and husband, Marty Westra and great-granddaughters Samantha and Jessica and grandsons Jason Herr and Josh Herr; one brother, Edmund Herr and two sisters, Evelyn Stoebner and Luella Goehring.
