I am trying to locate anyone researching the Gaerthoefner name. There are numerous spellings of the name in the LDS IGI-index; primarily from the Bavaria area of Germany. I believe the variations in spelling are a result of the two umlauts in the name. One family, Franz Joseph emmigrated approx. 1858, living for awhile in New York, eventually moving to Wisconsin. One son returned to New York. We have identified that son's descendants. There is a question re: Franz as to whether he lost his first wife and remarried - I have not been able to prove or disprove that theory to date. On the 1860 census for New York City Franz was living in the same household with Michael (who could be a brother, cousin, etc.) - I have not been able to track that line. I know there are people with that family name living in other states (not Wisconsin or New York). I suspect they are from another line and due to the rarity of that surname I suspect all are somehow related. Anyone researching the name please contact me via email or this msg. board. Thank you.

Death Record from St. Nazianz Parish, recorded by Rev. Peter Mutz, 1862-1880 Parish Records, copy found on microfiche at Diocese of Green Bay, Wisconsin. Record is written in a combination of German and English words. Difficult to transcribe. In March, 2002 Jean Schwonek attended a workshop offered through the Max Kade Institute at the University of Wisconsin-Madison on "Reading Old German Script" conducted by Dr. Helmut Schmahl and Karyl Rommelfanger. Ms. Rommelfanger is from Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Dr. Schmahl is a faculty member in the History Department at Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany. He is a visiting scholar at the Max Kade Institute during the Spring of 2002. I asked Dr. Schmahl and Ms. Rommelfanger for assistance in transcribing the death record on Franz. Death record states his date of death, place of death, age at death, and that he was buried the following day, 19th of June in godsacre. According to Dr. Schmahl, that is an old term for cemetery. There is no mention of place of birth, date of birth or parents names. Franz was the 16th death recorded for that year in the church record.

January 2003: Researched the "Germans to America" series by Ira Glazier and P. Wm. Filby. Went through the name index for Volumes 11 through 13 which covers the dates April 1857 to December 1860. Checked all last name beginning with "G", looked for any family group with the first names: Franz and/or Joseph, John or Johann, Michael or Michel. Did not find any family "G" with these three individuals.

They were told that John & Michael's mother died at sea during the voyage to the United States.
Catherine Helbert is Franz' second wife and the mother of Joseph.

Message: This obituary can be found in the Tri-County Record, Kiel, , Wisconsin. Issue - Thursday, October 7, 1920 Page 4, Column 1 Michael Gaerthoeffner, a well-known resident of the county, passed away on the homestead farm of his son Joseph near here last Friday, after a lingering illness with diabetes. The deceased was a native of Germany, where he was born July 18, 1848; he came to this country with his parents, who settled in this section. Mr. Gaerthoeffner was married about 45 years ago to Mary Schwab, who preceded him in death 3 1/2 years ago. He was a carpenter by trade but was a farmer for a number of years past. He is survived by seven children, viz: Edward, George and Joseph of St. Nazianz and Theodore of Antigo, Mrs. Martin Lutz, Mrs. Jos. Lutz and Mrs. Frank Resch of Sheboygan; also one brother, Joseph of Sheboygan, 22 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. The funeral took place on Monday forenoon, from St. Gregory's church, with interment in the church cemetery. Rev. Deibele officiated.

I continue to search for information about the "Maria/Mary" who married Franz Xaver "Frank" Schwab about 1850, and who came to St.Nazianz, WI about 1862. The last time we communicated, you provided me much information about the Schwab's but did not have much information about Mary. I have since learned that her maiden name was something like Pflester, Pfister or Fischer, and that she may have been born in Baden on 26 Mar 1824. Sheboygan, located 50 miles north of Milwaukee on the shores of Lake Michigan, was settled primarily by German, Irish and Dutch immigrants in the 1840s and 1850s. Jewish settlers arrived in the 1880s from an area east of Vilnius in the region that is today Belarus.
Other Lithuanians, their interest aroused by friends already in the United States, followed. Sheboygan became a destination because its numerous growing industries, chair factories in particular, provided well paying jobs. By 1903, the Lithuanian Catholic community in Sheboygan had grown sufficiently that a congregation for Lithuanian -speaking Catholics was formed, with 35 families and 50 individuals as members. The name Immaculate Conception Church was chosen. The first pastor was Rev. Casimer Ambrozaitis. Church members were buried at Calvary Cemetery until land for the parish cemetery was purchased in 1929.

From Jean Schwonek on 20 Feb 2017: Grandpa was born on Feb. 12 - Lincoln's birthday. There were always visitors coming to see Grandma and Grandpa - relatives, people that were actually 'friends' but I grew up thinking they were relatives because they were treated no less than the family that visited. Two of Grandpa's daughters never married and continued living with them so one of his 'escapes' from all the women in the house was to go into the basement for a cigar or pipe - he had a chair and his pipe stand on a small table in the furnace room - that was 'Grandpa's area' - which we always treated with respect. One of the 'additional' conditions on his death certificate (not cause of death) was blindness and I suspect it was macular degeneration - I'm not sure that was readily diagnosed as such in the '70's. Because of his vision issues his last few years of life he became an AVID radio listener. I remember telling him when I got contacs and thought I'd then have to explain what contacs were - first thing he said was "those are expensive" - his mind was sharp as a tack until the end. He listened to baseball games on the radio (which is were I attribute my love of baseball originated). When we were growing up the only time I remember Grandpa having 'custody' of the T.V. was Friday nights - for the Friday night boxing fights! He was a long-time employee of the Kohler Company (retiring from there) and had the misfortune of being an employee during the famous "strike" that went on for years. At that time as no money was coming into the home, my eldest aunt, Angie, left school and started working and according to my Mom, turned over her entire paycheck to her parents so they had money to live; they also lived in an upper duplex in Sheboygan that his sister & brother-in-law owned during those tough years. His son changed the spelling of the last name (for his subsequent family) to Gaerthofner. Grandpa's uncle (Michael's older brother) who moved back to New York and raised his family in NYC used the spelling Garthoffner. The 'ae' and 'oe' are a challenge because of the umlaut issue - do you use 'a umlaut' , 'e umlaut' ? I have done so many 'searches' over the years with all the variations (not using the 'e's, making the 'f' an 'ff', using one of the 'e's but not the other (Ex. ae, but only 'o', or only 'a', but oe, exchanging 'a' for 'e' and vice versa. There is a Gaerthoefner 'clan' in the Ohio area and as the name is so unusual I'm sure there is a connection but to date I haven't found one. I found a Garthoffner on the NYC census (1850's - don't have the info available at the moment - may have been one of their 'state' census years) so my 'theory' is that Grandpa's grandfather (Michael's father, Franz Joseph) briefly stayed in NYC because there was a relative, I think I have the marriage record of Franz and his first wife in Germany (John and Michael's father). The 'story' was that the wife died on the voyage to the U.S. (Forgive me, I'm doing all this from memory) I believe the 2nd wife was the mother to Michael's younger brother (Joseph) who I never knew existed until I questioned my aunt when I found him in Wisconsin in directories, etc.!

I have a Frank Resch (b.26 Dec 1878 in Germany; parents unknown) who married a Christina "Clara" Gaerthoefner (b.5 May 1887 nr.St.Nazianz, Manitowoc Co) at St.Nazianz or in Sheboygan, WI) around 1905. Im related to the Gaerthoefner's. Frank and Clara had at least 11 children including a son Joseph (grdson of your Joseph?). I believe the family settled for a time around Two Rivers, Manitowoc Co, WI although both Frank and Clara may have died in Sheboygan. Do these folks connect with yours? If so, I would like to talk to you further. Also, I have a Teresa Resch marrying a John Drews in Sheboygan in 1918 (unknown connection) and Barbara Resch marrying a Michael Seckinger in Niederkirchen, Deidesheim, Rheinpfalz, Bavaria in 1855.
