Newell was born July 23, 1929, in Sterling, IL, the eldest son of Lester and Ethel (Bowman) Newell. He married his high school sweetheart Rose Mary Droste on December 29, 1952.Bill attended St. Ambrose College, Davenport, IA, under a full football scholarship, and graduated in 1951 with a BS in Biology.He joined the Air Force in 1952 and was a 25 year Air Force veteran as a bomber pilot, fighter pilot and flight instructor. He was a decorated veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars. He retired as a full bird Colonel in 1976, with more than 90 combat missions over North Vietnam.After retiring from the USAF, he and Rose and their children returned to Sterling, where Bill worked for the National Mfg. Co. as the Executive Assistant to the President. He assisted in the expansion of National's home builders hardware business, the implementation of the Scanlon Plan for bonuses for hourly-employees and the planning & construction of all 4 of the Rock Falls shipping & operations plants. He retired in 1995 after 19 years.Bill passed away on Nov. 26, 2012. Rose, his wife of 60 years, passed away on March 8, 2016.Surviving are their 10 children: Paul (Penny) Newell, Kathy (Ed) Conway, Terry (Kim) Newell, Kevin (Cindy Bulka) Newell, Timothy (Miles Kalina) Newell, Peter (Lisa) Newell, Karen (Ed) Groleau, Colleen (Steve) Butts, Chuck (Michelle) Newell and John (Bethany) Newell; 11 grandsons, 6 granddaughters and 4 great-grandsons.He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Robert.
