NIVERVILLE, N.Y. Claire M. (Masten) Scheriff, 77, of Hawley Rd., Niverville, died Tuesday, October 17, 2006 at Albany Memorial Hospital. Born in Bay Ridge, N.Y., April 16, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Alida (Hebberd) Masten. Mrs. Scheriff was a bookkeeper for Ward Clark & Sons in Wynantskill, N.Y. and, prior to that, worked for Ed Gaylord for 13 years. Claire was instrumental in the re-establishment of the Niverville Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary in the early 1950s, a communicant of Nativity/St. Mary's Church in Stuyvesant Falls and a member of the Catholic Daughters of America. She is survived by four daughters, Kathleen Burnham of Syracuse, Marjorie Jennings of Claverack, Teresa E. Thompson of Niverville and Mary-Ann G. Smith of Stuyvesant; five sons, John T. Scheriff of Stuyvesant Falls, James A. Scheriff of Castleton, Andrew L. Scheriff of Bristol, Conn., Thomas J. Scheriff of Kinderhook and William F. Scheriff of Palenville; one sister, Dorothy Jacobs of Amsterdam; two brothers, Frank Masten of Kinderhook and Paul Masten of Valatie; beloved friends, Laura and Santi Zitto; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers, Raymond and Arthur Masten, and a granddaughter, Allison Scheriff. Funeral services will be held Friday at 12:30 p.m. from Nativity/St. Mary's Church, Stuyvesant Falls where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Frank O'Connor. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday from 4-8 p.m. at the Raymond E. Bond Funeral Home, Rt. 9, Valatie, N.Y.
