Bio: AGED GERMAN FARMER DIED LAST NIGHTPETER HEY, SR., PASSED AWAY AT MIDIGHT AT HIS HOME IN SHELBY TOWNSHIP--WAS NINETY-THREE YEARS OF AGE AND A RESIDENT OF THIS COUNTY FOR MORE THAN FIFTY YEARS---FUNERAL IN THIS CITY SUNDAY AFTERNOON. Surrounded by scenes familiar to him for more than forty years, Peter Hey Sr., probably the oldest male resident of the county, passed away at midnight last night on the "old home place" in Shelby Township. Looking out of his bedroom window the dying man might have seen the broad acres accumulated during a life of hard and honest toil and might have said with truth, "I have fought a good fight in the battle of life." Mr. Hey has been a resident of Shelby county for more than fifty years and in that time has drawn to himself a host of friends who will sincerely regret the passing of a good man while the whole community is saddened by the death of an excellent citizen. Honesty and uprightness of character gained Mr. Hey the respect of every one who knew him and his thrifty habits enabled him to acquire more than a competence for himself and family. Years ago he provided each of his children with a farm and still owned about two hundred acres of fine land at the time of his death. Mr. Hey was born in Milhofen, Germany, June 29, 1816, making him over ninety-three years of age at the time of his death. The early part of his life was spent in the little German village in which he was born and where he received his education. In 1842, at the age of twenty-six, he was united in marriage to Catherin Ottman, of the village of Nederhorbach. For several years afterward he engaged in farming in Germany, but in 1851 with his wife and family bade farewell to the fatherland and set out for America. It was in the days of sailing vessels and the voyage lasted for three months, the party finally disembarking at New Orleans, their port of entry. Continuing their journey by water they went up the Mississippi and Ohio rivers to Cincinnati, where they settled near the city and Mr. Hey engaged in farming and gardening until 1856. The family then came to this county and the senior Hey was employed for a year on the John DePrez farm in Addison Township. He rented land for four years more, but finally obtained eighty acres of government land in Shelby Township. He cleared the land himself, literally chopping a home out of the wilderness with his axe. By dint of hard labor he added a few acres to his farm year by year and in time became a prosperous farmer. He was a member of the German Evangelical Protestant church and in politics a strong democrat. Mrs. Hey died on the home place in Shelby Township several years ago. The deceased is survived by four sons, Peter, Jr., Daniel, and John, all of this county, and George, of Rush county; two daughters, Mrs. John Emrich, of this county, and Mrs. Catherine Burd, of Rush county, and a large number of other relatives in this state and Ohio. The funeral services will be held at the German church in this city at two o'clock Sunday afternoon, Rev. R. G. G. Winter, assisted by Rev. L. O. Richmond, officiating. Interment in Forest Hill cemetery in charge of D. B. Wilson & Son. Six grandsons of the deceased, Martin Hey, Henry Hey, Thomas Hey, George Hey, Will Hey and John Bird, will act as pall-bearers. The funeral cortege will leave the Hey home in Shelby Township at one o'clock Sunday afternoon. (Obit: Shelbyville Democrat, Nov. 11, l909)
