Madden and Pete Costello divorced. Pete remarried Ally Deaver of Little Rock, Arkansas. The attorney that orchestrated the removal of the children immediately adopted Robert Louis and renamed him Robert Benjamin Hegler. Robert's birthday has since been modified to July 6, 1917.
