Bio: Walter Henry Frick, 89, passed away on November 8. Walter was born on March 10, 1922 in Indianapolis to Merea and William Frick and was one of seven children, including Mildred Hunter of Indianapolis. His beloved wife of 58 years, Margery Ellen Rhoads Frick, passed away in 2001.Walter is survived by three children, David (Ann) of Indianapolis, Jan Peter (Linda) of Kansas City, MO, and Barbara Ann Frick Kays (David) of Baltimore, MD. He was the proud grandfather of Thomas Rhoads Frick of Hong Kong (Caroline Wong), Amy Frick Longoria (Rene) of Indianapolis, Andrew Lee Kays (Julie) of Lutherville, MD, David Scott Kays (Brooke) of Ayden, NC, Rebecca Lynn Kays of Baltimore, MD, and Christopher Frick of Kansas City, MO.Walter's great-grandchildren were the sunshine of his life: triplets Gabriella, Sydney and Jillianne Longoria, Audrey and Ava Wong-Frick, Anthony, Danielle (Zach Stevens) and Kara Longoria, Ellie, Brody and Lara Kays, and Ellagrace and Joanna Kays. He leaves two great-great-granddaughters, twins Molly and Emma Stevens, and nieces and nephews. Although Walter and his siblings were "depression kids," they experienced a home filled with love and family togetherness. As a boy, Walter delivered magazines three days a week and as a teen worked as a soda jerk in the corner drugstore. He graduated from Arsenal Technical High School and attended Purdue University before serving as a Sea Bee in New Guinea and the Philippines during WWII.In 1948 Walter realized a lifelong dream and became a civil engineer. During a 43 year career he held various positions with the Indiana State Highway Commission and served 17 years as Assistant Chief Engineer before becoming the Director of the State Office of Traffic Safety. He was proud of the role he played in creating the interstate highway system and was nicknamed the "cloverleaf king" by his family.Walter was honored twice as a "Sagamore of the Wabash" and also was made an honorary Lieutenant Colonel of the Indiana State Police. Walter enjoyed the outdoors and took much pleasure in camping with his family and fishing and hunting with his buddies. He served as a Sunday School teacher, youth leader and member of the official board of the Methodist Church.Following a paralyzing stroke in 2006, Walter faced the daunting challenge of being dependent on others. He was grateful to the Westside Garden Plaza staff who provided him with loving assistance and skilled care. Despite his physical infirmity, Walter's mind stayed sharp throughout five years of debilitating illness: it was Walter who called out the answers to trivia questions and was quick to find the answers to the crossword puzzles which were a highlight of his day, as was the double dip of chocolate ice cream with a generous coating of chocolate sauce.
