Birth: Jan. 20, 1818 Südwestpfalzer Landkreis Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany Death: Sep. 25, 1858 Rochester Monroe County New York, USA Grocer, Alderman for the City of Rochester, and Ranger veteran of the 1838 invasion of Canada, Sebastion survived the battle of the Windmill to return to Rochester and raise a family. Sebastian haled from the Wausgau Meyer family, one of four Meyer families in Rochester during the first half of the 19th century. The relation, if any, between the four families are not clear. The Philip Meyer family were boat-builders from Baden-Wurtemburg; the George Meyer family were cabinetmakers from Hesse to the north; the Martin Meyer family were tailors from Schifferstadt in the Rhineland, and the Sebastian Meyers were laborers from the Wausgau interior, about 50 miles to the southwest. Though distant from Schifferstadt and Speyer, the Wausgau had traditional ties to the area through the Bishop Prince of Speyer. Sebastian's son, Martin, is by family narrative, allegedly to have been named for Martin the Tailor. The two families lived within two blocks of each other in the German quarter of Rochester, near Old Saint Joseph's Church. Sebastian was an important lay leader at Old Saint Joe's, and Martin's son Joseph carved the church's ceilings before he met his spouse there, Elizabeth Ramstetter, a member of the choir. Sebastian Meyer died on Sep. 25, 1858, and was interred in the Old Saint Joseph's boneyard located at East Main and Goodman, in Rochester. When the cemetery was closed and remains transferred to Holy Sepulchre in 1871, it is thought that he was buried in the mass grave located along the north boundary of the Eastern Division.
