Birth: Jun. 8, 1919 Hosmer Edmunds County South Dakota, USA Death: Feb. 27, 2006 Aberdeen Brown County South Dakota, USA Aberdeen - Funeral service for Eugene Mehlhaff, 86, Aberdeen will be 2 p.m. Friday, March 3, 2006, at First Reformed Church with Pastor David Dawn officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Eugene died Monday, Feb. 27 at the Aberdeen Living Center. Visitation will be from 1-7 p.m. Thursday at Spitzer Funeral Home, 320 Sixth Ave. S.E., and one hour prior to the service. Eugene Mehlhaff was born on June 8, 1919, at Hosmer, S.D., to Edward and Christina (Thurn) Mehlhaff. This is the area where he grew up and attended school. On Oct. 8, 1940, he married Sarah Kirschenmann at Hosmer, S.D. They made their home on a farm near Hosmer for 17 years when they moved to Leola, where he worked for the American Legion. In 1969, they moved to Aberdeen, where he worked for First Presbyterian Church as a custodian until he retired in 1990. Eugene was a member of First Reformed Church, Aberdeen. He loved raising roses. Eugene loved his family and had a great sense of humor. Grateful for having shared Eugene's life are his wife, Sarah Mehlhaff, Aberdeen; daughter, Charlotte (Carrold) Kraemer, Aberdeen; son, Charles (Margaret) Mehlhaff, Milbank, S.D.; four grandchildren, Clark (Jayne) Kraemer and Cathy (Robert) Dafoe, Courtney Mehlhaff and Meghan Mehlhaff; five great-grandchildren, Allyson Kraemer, Justin Kraemer, Jacob Dafoe, Thomas Dafoe and Samuel Dafoe; and his sister-in-law, Emilia Mehlhaff. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Christina Mehlhaff, two brothers, Arthur and Norman Mehlhaff. Honorary casketbearers will be all of Eugene's grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Casketbearers will be Clark Kraemer, Ralph Kusler, Ryan Heyne, Rob Keil, LeRoy Mehlhaff and John Bender. The organist will be Becky Mehlhoff and duet by Doug Haak and Karen Kusler.
