PLATTEVILLE - E. Kathleen "Katie" Bonin, age 78, of Platteville, died on Saturday, May 27, 2006, at her home. Katie was born on July 28, 1927, in Shullsburg, the daughter of Fred and Elizabeth (Botzet) Stephan. Katie was united in marriage to Francis "Pete" Bonin on July 27, 1950, at St. Matthew's Catholic Church, Shullsburg. Pete preceded her in death on Sept. 18, 1978.
She graduated from Shullsburg High School in 1945. She attended Winona State University, and then Platteville Teachers College, graduating in 1950. She taught math in Savanna, Illinois, Platteville Teachers College, and for 25 years, for the Platteville Community Schools, retiring in 1993 after 37 years of service. She became a partner in the Thomas, Bonin, Soman Funeral Home, Platteville, in September of 1978, following the death of her husband. She bought the Bonin Funeral Home in January 1979 and later sold the Bonin Funeral Home to John Soman and Ed Bendorf in 1984.
She was a member of the Quota Club, St. Mary's Catholic Church, Platteville. She was currently serving on the board of the John Barth Foundation at UW-Platteville. She loved to spend her summer months at her cottage, "Heaven on Water", in Cassville. She enjoyed traveling throughout the world. She enjoyed following her grandsons in their sporting events. She was an avid UW-Platteville Pioneer, Badger and Packers fan. She also enjoyed modified dirt track racing.
She is the loving mother of three children, Stephanie (Ron) Sniadach of Grafton, Marc (Margaret) Bonin of Platteville, and Julitta "Jill" (Steve) Schielke of Burlington; cherished grandmother of four grandsons, Pete and Kevin Bonin of Platteville, Ryan Sniadach of Grafton, and Jason Schielke of Burlington; special niece, Carol (Dennis) Caldwell of Black River Falls; two nephews, Richard (Nora) Bonin of Platteville, and Larry (Lois) Bonin of Eureka, Ill.; cousins, other relatives, and friends; extended family companions, Onyx, Missy, Buttons, and Wizzer.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Charles Stephan.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 30, 2006, at ST. MARY'S CATHOLIC CHURCH, Platteville. Monsignor Charles Schluter will officiate. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, Platteville.
