Calvin Jahraus, 92, Eureka, SD, died Sunday, September 14, 2014 at the Avera Eureka Healthcare Center. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM, Thursday, September 18, 2014 at First Baptist Church, Eureka, with Pastor Gary Bergman leading the service. Interment follows at the Eureka Cemetery. Organist will be Esther Grosz and the congregation will sing “In the Garden”, “I Know Whom I have Believed”, and “When the Roll is called up Yonder”. Pastor Gary and Linda Bergman will sing “What a Day That Will Be”. Ushers will be Don Heupel and Cletis Grenz.
Visitation will be at Lien-Straub Funeral Chapel, Eureka, from 6:00-9:00 PM Wednesday with Calvin’s family present from 6:00-7:00 PM.
Calvin Jahraus, son of Sophia (Orth) and Arthur Jahraus, was born December 25, 1921 at the Jahraus farm 2 ½ miles NE of Greenway, SD. He was brought up on the farm and attended Spring Creek #2 Rural School. Following his schooling, he helped his dad on the farm and also was involved with WPA’s experimental farm just east of Eureka. Calvin married Lydia Moser at the Herreid Baptist Church on July 1, 1945. They settled on Calvin’s homeplace. April 1979, they relocated to Eureka. Calvin still helped Dennis on the farm and also, as he was on the Eureka Cemetery Board, did a lot of lawn mowing at the cemetery. The Past 3 ½ years, he had lived at the Healthcare Center. Calvin was a member of First Baptist Church which he served as a trustee, Sunday school teacher and superintendent. He also belonged to the Eureka Senior Center and the rural school board. Calvin was proud of his cattle and liked riding horses. He loved gopher hunting and, in retirement, did some fishing.
Calvin is survived by Lydia, his wife of 69 years; three children—Pastor Donald (Pastor Sharon) Jahraus of Trenton, MO, Loretta (Dennis W.) Meyer of Huron, SD, and Dennis (Cheryl) Jahraus of Eureka; three sisters, Bertha Bentz and Lorraine Beck of Eureka and Florence (Hilbert) Huber of Owatonna, MN; six grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren, Stephanie (Keith) Hespe and their children Wyatt, Kalli, and Zachary; Angela (Bill) Anderson and their children Henry, Lydia, and Eleanor; Sara (Ryan) Miller and their children Lane, Tate, and Gabe; Valerie (Troy) Anderson and their children Joseph, Lucas, and Reid; Dustin (Jessica) Jahraus and their children Ellie, Jeremiah, Isaiah, and Sophie; David (Kristy) Jahraus and their daughter Emily.
Preceding Calvin in death were his father on April 3, 1962, his mother on May 26, 1993, and one sister (Leona Bentz).
Honorary bearers will be the Avera Eureka Healthcare Center Staff.
Casketbearers will be Keith Hespe of Okaton, SD, Bill Anderson of Vermillion, SD, Ryan Miller of Winfred, SD, Troy Anderson of Centerville, SD, Dustin Jahraus of Mound City, SD, and David Jahraus of Pella, Iowa.
Lien-Straub Funeral Chapel, Eureka, is in charge of arrangements.
