Eugene Zins, 90, Turtle Lake, formerly of Raleigh, died Jan. 3, 2005, in a Turtle Lake care center. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m. MST (2 p.m. CST) Saturday, Jan. 8, at St. Gertrude's Church, Raleigh, with the Rev. Gary Benz officiating. Burial will be at St. Lawrence Cemetery in Flasher.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. CST Friday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a parish vigil and rosary will be held at 7 p.m. CST. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church.
Eugene Anton Zins was born Dec. 12, 1914, in Red Lake Falls, Minn. He was the son of the late Adam and Anna (Krantz) Zins. His family moved to a farm site near Timmer, in the fall of 1926. In 1938, they again moved to a farm site near Raleigh, and is currently owned and operated by third generation, Francis Zins. Eugene married Lucy (Kuntz) Zins on Nov. 17, 1941, at St. Gertrude's Catholic Church. Together they farmed and raised a family of 13 children.
Due to Eugene's efforts, the St. Gertrude Court No. 2174 of the Catholic Order of Foresters was formed. Eugene was treasurer of the Three Butte Township for many years.
In the late 1950s, Eugene was very active and instrumental in the planning and construction, of the present church building, St. Gertrude's, of Raleigh. A school was constructed adjacent to the church, which was known as St. Gertrude's High School and currently known as Prairie Learning Center. Eugene also was active in the formation of the Leahy Public Grade School.
In 1994, Eugene and Lucy retired, and moved to Mandan. After 55 years of being together, Lucy, not being able to care for Eugene, he moved to the Turtle Lake Hospital-Nursing Facility in 1996.
He is survived by four daughters and two sons-in-law, Veronica and David Miller, St. Louis Park, Minn., Marie Zins, Grafton, Martha and Lee Williams, Fort Worth, Texas, and Gertrude Zins, Hazen; eight sons and five daughters-in law, Bernard and Virgina, Bismarck, Jerome and Beverly, McKenzie, Roger, Raleigh, Leo, Sterling, David, Mandan, Simon and Charlene, New Salem, Francis and Barbara, Raleigh, and Arnold and Carolyn, Mandan; 20 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Eva Wingenbach, Mandan.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucy; two sons, Aloysius "Al" and one infant son; two sisters, Lenora Zins and Margaret Hoff; and five brothers, Valentine "Wally," Gerhard, Leander, and two infant brothers.
