Birth: Jul. 2, 1923 Sturgis Meade County South Dakota, USA Death: Jan. 11, 2008 Spearfish Lawrence County South Dakota, USA Katherine Magaret Orth was born Monday, July 2, 1923 in Sturgis, SD, to Henry Carl and Anna Elvira (Asp) Orth. She grew up in Stoneville, SD. She graduated from Stoneville High School in 1942. Following graduation from high school, Katherine worked for the ASC Office in Sturgis. In 1944 she moved to Rapid City and worked at Enloe's Gift Shop. Katherine returned to work in Sturgis at the ASC Office in 1949. Katherine was married to Nels "Wally" Swenson on October 8, 1949 at Sturgis, SD. In 1953 they moved to their ranch north of the airport in Spearfish, where they ranched. Katherine was a devoted partner on the ranch with her husband and devoted mother to their three boys. Wally died in 1998 and Katherine has continued to live in Spearfish. Katherine died Friday, January 11, 2008 in Spearfish Regional Hospital. Surviving are her three sons, John (Cynthia) Swenson; Keith (Jolynn) Swenson both of Gillette, WY, and William (Joy) Swenson of Spearfish, SD, one sister, Virginia Benning of Belle Vista, AR, her grandchildren, Andy Swenson, Stephanie Agle, Matt Agle, Katie Swenson, Sam Swenson, Elizabeth Swenson, Luke Swenson, Hannah Swenson, Joshua Swenson, David Swenson, her great-grandchildren, Azra Ford, Alahna Sansom, Christian Sansom, Daniel Sansom, numerous nieces and nephews. Her husband, Nels "Wally" Swenson and parents; and an infant granddaughter, Whitney Rae Swenson, preceded her in death. Services will be held at United Methodist Church, Thursday, January 17, 2008 with Pastor Dar Berkenpas officiating. Burial will follow in the Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis, SD.
