James J. Prengaman Jr., 68, of Derry, died Thursday, July 9, 2009, at his home in Peanut. He was born Sept. 21, 1940, in Braddock. As a young man he was very active in scouting and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, demonstrating his strength in service and leadership. He was a veteran of the Army, earning the rank of First Lieutenant. Jim retired from the Derry Area School District with more than 30 years of elementary school teaching service and was a finalist for the Department of Education's Teacher of the Year. Jim was a devoted member of St. Martin Church, in New Derry. He had a love for nature and a special love for children. He spent years sponsoring the Outdoor Education program at Derry in order to share his interest with others. Jim could always be found outdoors in his garden and later in his greenhouses, and selling his handmade Christmas wreaths. Jim was a remarkable man who had a positive impact on those who knew him. We will always miss him. Survived by his wife of 44 years, Jane (Ferguson) Prengaman; loving father of James C. Prengaman and wife, Renie, Joseph T. Prengaman and Erica Jane Sunny and husband, Richard; Pap Pap of Ivy, Laurel and Blaze Prengaman and Ian and Luke Sunny; brother of Carol Shaffer and Linda Tarle; son of Carolyn and the late James J. Prengaman Sr. Jim's visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday and from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the MATTHEW X. MERLIN FUNERAL HOME INC., 529 N. Chestnut St., Derry. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday in St. Martin Roman Catholic Church, New Derry. Interment will be in St. Martin Cemetery, New Derry.
