Walter L. Schmidt, 63, of 1 Burton place, died suddenly at his home Friday at 9:30 a.m.
The deceased was an engineer on the Litchfield & Madison railroad for the past 45 years and was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, a member of the Holy Name society and the Western Catholic union as well as a member of St. Boniface Catholic church.
He was born Jan. 17, 1891 in Edwardsville, the son of the late Louis and Bertha (Schmitt) Schmidt. On Sept. 4, 1912, he married Miss Margaret Schmider at St. Boniface Catholic church. The Rev. J.D. Metzler performed the ceremony.
Besides his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Duane (Margaret) Daniel and Miss Mary Jane Schmidt, both of Edwardsville and Mrs. James (Geraldine) Ryan of St. Louis; five brothers, Eugene and Raymond of Edwardsville, Ollie of Wood River and Louis and Wilbur of Highland, Ind., and three sisters, Mrs. Margaret Callanhan of Wood River, Mrs. Robert (Evelyn) Burris of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Mrs. Edward (Gladys) Kessman of Edwardsville.
He is also survived by five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. One son preceded him in death in infancy.
Friends and relatives may call at the Straube funeral home after 7 p.m. Saturday until 8:30 a.m. Monday when the body will be taken to St. Boniface Catholic church where a solemn requiem mass will be held at 9 a.m., with the Rev. George E. Faller officiating.
The rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Calvary cemetery.
Pallbearers were Eugene Schmidt, Louis Schmidt, Ollie Schmidt, Albert Schmeider, Jake Schmeider and Frank Schmeider.
