Eugene Eckroth, 81, of Sheridan, passed away on Friday, July 18, 2003, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County.
Gene was born on October 31, 1921, in Mandan, ND to George and Beatrice (Kautzman) Eckroth. Gene Attended Jamestown College on a full ride basketball scholarship. He enlisted in the Army in May, 1940. He attended OCS at Fort Sill, Oklahoma and graduated in September, 1942. He participated in the Guadalcaual and Luzon campaigns in the Pacific, as an officer in the 8th Field Artillery Battalion, 25th Division, 6th Army. After the war, he served in the Army Reserve in Montana and National Guard in Wyoming. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel, HHB, 1st BN, Wyoming ARNG on March 9, 1973. He received the Wyoming National Guard Distinguished Service Medal as the Battalion Commander for the 1-49 Field Artillery Battalion. Following the war, Gene attended Montana State University and graduated with a Masters Degree in Agronomy. On September 11, 1946 Gene married Elizabeth "Betty" Labrie and their union was blessed with five children. Gene loved watching sports and was also an avid watcher of politics. He was a life member of the Elks Club and was also a member of the VFW, Knights of Columbus, and the Secular Order of St. Frances.
Mr. Eckroth was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother Peter. Survivors include his three daughters, Susan Adams and her husband Joe of Billings, MT, Colleen Larsen and her husband Jerry of Casper, WY, and Kerry Zolg and her husband Robert of Huntington Beach, CA; his two sons, James Eckroth and his wife Andrea of Casper, WY and David Eckroth and his wife Laurie of Billings, MT; his eleven grandchildren and three great grandchildren; his brother Henry "Buck" Eckroth of Mandan, ND; and his sister Virginia Boehm also of Mandan, ND.
The Rosary will be said at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, July 21, 2003, at Holy Name Catholic Church. Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 22, 2003, at Holy Name Catholic Church with The Reverend Ron Stolcis officiating. Interment will follow in the Sheridan Elks Cemetery. Kane Funeral Home is handling the arrangements
