Dr. Richard "Dick" Nist, 69, died at his home in Anchorage on Sunday, 28 October 2012.
Dick moved to Alaska in 1976 to practice medicine in Anchorage. His son, Jacob, was born shortly thereafter. As a doctor, Dick delivered thousands of babies. He loved it when people would stop him in the store and tell him that a child he had delivered had just graduated from high school, gotten married or had kids of their own.
Dick was born on July 15, 1943 and grew up outside of Minneapolis. He delighted in bossing around his two little brothers, Bob and Jack. In high school and college, Dick was an avid swimmer and loved to drive his little Peugeot he called "the red seducer."
Dick attended college at the University of Minnesota and later went on to medical school at Cornell University. Dick loved children and completed his residency in obstetrics in Seattle. He always said it was the best job in medicine because you got to be a part of the best day in someone's life.
Dick was an "idea man" and loved nothing more than to analyze, re-analyze, and over-analyze what he saw around him. He believed that he could always come up with a better solution. He spent hundreds of hours designing furniture, his boat and his house. He loved NBA basketball, the stock market, and Myers-Briggs personality typology. He was never shy about expressing his firmly-held and often novel opinions.
In 2002, Dick married the love of his life, Yeu-Ming Chen. He loved learning about Chinese culture from her. In 2011, Dick's grandchild, Gannon, was born.
Dick always hated big gatherings, so his memorial service will be a small affair for a handful of his close friends and family members. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Dick should grab a drink, put your feet up, and enjoy an NBA game. View Dick's online obituary and sign the guestbook at www.AlaskanFuneral.com.
