Birth: May 1, 1843 Südwestpfalzer Landkreis Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany Death: Dec. 25, 1909 West Bend Washington County Wisconsin, USA Obituary - West Bend Pilot Death of a Nobel Man Joseph Bauer of Town of West Bend called to his reward on Christmas morning – aged 66 years Joseph Bauer, one of the town of West Bend’s best known farmers and most highly esteemed citizens died at his home Christmas morning after a lingering illness with cancer of the stomach. Mr. Bauer was taken ill last September and although his illness was critical at times, no one believed that his death was so near. During the last few days however, he sank rapidly, and surrounded by his wife and all of his children, when “Glory to God in the Highest and on Earth Peace to Men of Good Will” was sung throughout the land, he passed away peacefully to join God’s chosen in their Christmas carol. Mr. Bauer was born in Bavaria, Germany on May 1, 1843. In 1855 he came to America and the same year he settled in the town of West Bend, and there he resided continuously until he died. On Jan. 18, 1870, he married Miss Gertrude Wagner, and we believe we can state very truthfully that a more happy or more contented couple never resided within the confines of the county. Eight children were born to them, seven of whom survive their father, namely John of Hewitt, Stephan; Philip and Frank of the town of West Bend, Henry F. and Peter of this city, and Mrs. Henry Thoma of Hartford. Besides the widow and the children named, the deceased is survived by one sister, Mrs. Henry Kauffung of Barton, and by fifteen grand-children. Mr. Bauer’s funeral took place Tuesday morning under the auspices of the Catholic church, interment being made in Holy Angels’ cemetery. In the death of Mr. Bauer, his family loses an ideal husband and father, and the community loses a man of sterling worth and character. Mr. Bauer was goodness and cheerfulness personified and these traits won him the lasting esteem of scores upon scores of friends. He was hard worker and as honest and upright a man as ever lived and the sorrow at his death is widespread and sincere. The memory he leaves behind will ever be cherished by those who were near and dear to him, while his noble life will stand as an example for all who live after him. May he rest in peace. To the bereaved family we extend hour heartfelt sympathy.
