Mrs. Henry Kauffung Dead.
Mrs. Catherine Kauffung, wife of Henry Kauffung and a sister of the late Joseph Bauer, died at her home in this city shortly after noon last Saturday, her death being caused by bronchitis and pneumonia after only a week’s illness. Mrs. Kauffung was born in Bavaria, Germany on July 4, 1840. She came to America in 1855, settling in the town of West Bend. On February 22, 1864 she married Henry Kauffung and two years later they went to Boltonville where they conducted a saloon and tavern until 1883. They then retired to private life, making their home at Newburg and Barton until a year ago, they came to this city. Mrs. Kauffung was the mother of two children, Henry W. and William F., both of whom reside in Milwaukee. Her aged husband and five grandchildren survive her. Her funeral was held Tuesday morning under the auspices of the Catholic Church. Interment being made in the Holy Angels Cemetery. Six nephews of the deceased, John, Stephan, Henry, Phillip, Frank and Peter Bauer acted as pallbearers. Mrs. Kauffung was an everyday Christian. The beautifying influences of a pure religion were spread over a life and character as spotless and charming as was ever possessed by any of the noble women who have lived and died during the ages that are gone. As such a life was a blessing and benefaction to all within the sphere of its influence so is the death of such a public misfortune, as well as an irreparable loss to the home circle, made desolate by her departure. It is difficult to pay a fitting tribute to the memory of so noble a woman – one whose everyday life was embellished by the most charming and lovable attributes of her sex. Mrs. Kauffung was a good woman at all times and under all circumstances, who seemed born to inspire the love and respect of all who were so fortunate as to be acquainted with her. The aged husband and the sons have lost their truest friend, only the sweet memory of a good wife and mother remaining to be cherished as long as memory lasts. To them we extend our deepest sympathy..
