A funeral Mass for Thomas “Tom” B. Kuntz, 90, of Dickinson, formerly of Hebron will be 11:00 a.m. CST, Friday, September 23, 2016 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Hebron with Father Jeff Zwack celebrating. Burial will take place in St. Ann’s Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation for Tom will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. MDT, Thursday, September 22 at Stevenson Funeral Home, Dickinson with a rosary and vigil service being held at 6:00 p.m. MDT. Visitation will continue on Friday one hour prior to the service at the church.
Tom passed away Sunday, September 18, 2016 at Evergreen in Dickinson.
Thomas B. Kuntz was born on the family farm in Grant County on November 17, 1925, to Mathias and Mathilda (Loran) Kuntz. He was the fourth youngest in a family of 11 children. He attended a country school and continued to farm with his dad. He was active in the mission church of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.
Tom met Christine (Tina) Wallery at a dance and they were married on September 6, 1947 in St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Hebron. He worked on the construction of Lake Tschida Dam while they lived in Glen Ullin. Together, they took over the farming operation in 1948, raising small grains, cattle and hogs and they milked cows. Tom and Tina became the parents of two daughters, Linda and Joan, and three sons, David, Tom and Robert, who all attended Hebron schools. Tom was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 4004 and Farmers Union. His life revolved around his family and farming responsibilities, but he also knew how to have fun. He played on a fast-pitch softball team, was a member of a Glen Ullin archery club and went hunting for whatever was in season – be it pheasant or duck, that trophy mule deer in the Badlands or the coyotes and fox. Tom and Tina loved to go dancing, especially the Saturday night dances at Glen Ullin, or to entertain for Sunday dinners. They frequently got together with the neighbors to play pinochle and they also loved to go fishing at Lake Tschida. He was a proud teacher of trap shooting to his grandchildren, a hobby he enjoyed with the league in Hebron. Tom and Tina retired from farming and moved to Hebron in 1997. His grandkids loved to shoot fireworks or their BB guns at targets along the Little Knife River. Tom continued to live in Hebron after Tina died in 2003. He moved into Glen Ullin in 2013 and made his final move in March, 2015 to Evergreen assisted living in Dickinson. He loved to read Westerns and play his beloved guitar.
Tom is survived by his children, Linda (Duane) Sailer of Dickinson, David (Jody) Kuntz of Olathe, KS, Joan (Jim) Curl of Gainesville, FL and Tom (Lee Ann) Kuntz of Campbell, CA; his daughter-in-law, Rosemarie Kuntz of Bismarck; and one brother, Joe Kuntz of Hazen. He leaves behind seven grandchildren, Mark (Melissa) Sailer, Foot Hill Ranch, CA, Carrie Sailer (Daniel Toms) of Portland, OR, Ryan (Cindy) Kuntz of Pittsburgh, PA, Aric (Crystal Yakel) of Kansas City, KS, Lewis (L.J.) Curl of Gainesville, FL, Nathan (Valerie) Kuntz of Bismarck, Rachell (Mac) Kirk of Kalispell, MT; and six great-grandchildren, Alexander and Cassandra Sailer, Anthony, Amelie & Zoe Kuntz, and Avery Kuntz.
Those who preceded him in death included his wife, Tina; son, Robert; five brothers, Mike, Leo, Phillip, John and Raymond; four sisters, Rose, Ann, Regina and Lorraine; and one grandson, Louis John.
