Military honors were by American Legion Loren Hollister Post #496 of Mapleton. Clarence Burkhart was born to Clarence, Sr., and Violet (VanCleve) Burkhart on April 15, 1922, in Holly Springs, IA. He attended schools in Holly Springs, Castana and Mapleton. He served in the US Army, stationed in Germany and France during WW2. He married Delores Marsh on August 21, 1944, in Onawa, IA. He worked as a mechanic for Mac's Chevrolet for several years, ran the B&O Standard Station from the late 1960's to the mid 1970's with his brother-in-law, Keith Oregon, and later worked for Mel Woodward doing carpentry and odd jobs for Jerry Bumstead. He was an active member of St. John's United Methodist Church in Mapleton. He enjoyed family get togethers, dancing, watching sports on TV and, most of all, making candy and cookies because he knew his family looked forward to all the goodies. He is survived by his wife of 60 years; 2 daughters; 5 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; 1 brother and his wife and several nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by parents, brother: Francis, 2 sisters: Betty Jacoby and Twila Oregon. Arrangements by Armstrong Funeral Home of Mapleton.
